For Elliot Boston, studying at his local Club, Middlesbrough Football Club, has helped turn a lifelong love of football into a goal of working in football analysis. 

Through the degree programme delivered in partnership with Middlesbrough Football Club, EFL in the Community and the University of South Wales (USW), the 22-year-old has been able to combine studying with hands-on experience in a professional football environment, all while staying close to home and balancing work and family commitments. 

The course gave Elliot the chance to put what he was learning into practice around the Club, helping him develop his knowledge of the game, build his confidence and take steps towards a career in football. 

But just weeks before completing his final year, everything changed. 

"I thought I just had a cold or chest infection," Elliot said. "I was struggling to breathe and coughing up blood, so eventually I went to hospital. They found my blood pressure was dangerously high and I ended up in intensive care." 

After further tests, Elliot was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition that caused his immune system to attack his kidneys. One kidney has permanently failed and the other has severely reduced function, meaning he will eventually need a kidney transplant. 

Despite spending weeks in hospital and facing an uncertain future, Elliot was determined to finish what he had started. 

"I was so close to finishing," he said. "I didn't want to give up and have to repeat the whole year. I was doing assignments from my hospital bed, even though I was being told to rest. That's how much I wanted to finish. 

"I couldn't even carry my own bag because I was so weak. My friends carried it for me. The staff were brilliant and made adjustments so I could take part in a way that worked for me. Everyone was really understanding, and I'm very grateful because it helped me complete the course." 

Football has always been a big part of Elliot's life. Coaching alongside his dad as a teenager sparked an interest in understanding the game from a different angle, and that interest only grew during his time at Middlesbrough Football Club. 

The degree helped him see how coaching, sports science and performance analysis all come together to support player development. Along the way, he also grew in confidence and became more certain about the path he wants to follow. 

"Analysing the game and helping players improve really interests me," he said. "At the moment I need to focus on my health, but that's still where I'd like my career to go. The course has helped me understand football in more detail and given me the confidence to keep working towards that." 

Despite the challenges he has faced, Elliot is still focused on the future. His determination to complete his studies in such difficult circumstances reflects the resilience that has carried him through, and he is still working towards his ambition of building a career in football analysis. 

Former England international Joleon Lescott helped kick off another season of Kellogg's Football Camps by surprising children at a London camp, officially welcoming the first intake of the summer to Team Kellogg's.

Inspired by the iconic transfer unveilings seen across the professional game, Joleon Lescott gave the young players their own signing-day moment, inviting them to put pen to paper to join Team Kellogg’s, before posing for the all-important handshake photo and receiving their very own Team Kellogg’s shirt and certificate - recreating the excitement of a professional football signing moment.

With the formalities complete, the former consultant coach for the England Under-21s swapped the signing table for the training pitch, where he thrilled budding young footballers by joining them for drills and challenges.

Drawing on his own journey from grassroots football to a commanding centre-back for Manchester City and earning 26 caps for England, Lescott coached the children through drills and skills from his days as a professional, while sharing advice and encouragement to help them develop their skills, build confidence and make new friends through the game.

The surprise ‘signing ceremony’ comes as new Kellogg's research reveals that 74% of parents say major sporting events inspire their children to get involved in sport, highlighting the powerful role these moments play in motivating the next generation to lace up their boots and get active.

The research also found that, at a time when families continue to seek affordable ways to keep children busy, 30% of parents say they rely on free activities during the holidays, with holiday camps (25%) and sports clubs (19%) providing vital support. 

Now in their third year, Kellogg's Football Camps are back at 73 clubs across the UK, offering more than 39,000 FREE places for children aged 5–15 in partnership with the English Football League (EFL), Manchester City FC, Celtic FC and Rangers FC.

Led by FA-qualified coaches, the camps give children the chance to get active, develop their football skills, build confidence and train like their sporting heroes throughout the summer holidays.

Joleon Lescott said: “After such a great summer of sport and ahead of the new season it’s brilliant to see so many of the next generation excited to get out on the pitch themselves. Welcoming them to Team Kellogg's with their own ‘signing ceremony’ was great fun, but the best part was seeing them straight out there enjoying football together.

Young women from across Birmingham explored the link between sustainability and everyday life as Birmingham City FC Foundation took part in the Girls of Brum Summer Showcase.

The Foundation’s Blues Go Green team attended the event at Alexander Stadium, where girls from local schools and communities were invited to take part in activities designed to build confidence, develop new skills and encourage leadership.

Delivered by Sport Birmingham, Girls of Brum brings together organisations from across the city to create more opportunities for girls to engage in sport, physical activity and personal development.

During the showcase, Blues Go Green worked alongside Final Third Sport to deliver practical challenges focused on climate action and environmental responsibility.

The activities encouraged participants to consider the impact of their everyday choices and highlighted simple steps they can take to support a more sustainable future.

The session formed part of Birmingham City FC Foundation’s wider Blues Go Green programme, which uses accessible and engaging activities to help young people better understand environmental issues.

Funded by the National Lottery Community Climate Action Fund, the programme continues to work with communities across Birmingham to make sustainability education relevant to young people’s lives.

Lucy Bird, Project Manager for Blues Go Green, said: “Events such as Girls of Brum are incredibly important because they create opportunities for young women to try something new, meet inspiring people and build confidence in a supportive environment.

“Through Blues Go Green, we’re passionate about helping young people understand sustainability in a way that feels practical and accessible, and it was fantastic to have those conversations with so many girls from across Birmingham.”

The showcase also gave the Foundation the opportunity to work alongside organisations with a shared commitment to creating positive experiences for young women across the city.

Football has lost one of its most beloved figures.

Kevin Keegan, whose name became synonymous with everything thrilling about the English game in the 1970s and early 1980s, and then later as manager of the national tean, has died at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer.

Long before “King Kev” became a household name across Europe, he was a teenager from Doncaster taking his first steps in the professional game, and it’s that journey through the Football League that shaped the player the whole football world came to love.

And later, during his managerial career, a newer generation would became familiar with Keegan through his time as England manager, leading the Three Lions to qualification for Euro 2000.

From Scunthorpe to superstardom

Keegan’s story began at Scunthorpe United, who handed him his professional debut in the late 1960s.

It was there, in the lower reaches of the Football League, that the raw materials of his game - relentless movement, an appetite for hard work and an instinctive nose for goal - first caught the eye of scouts across the country.

It was enough to convince Liverpool manager Bill Shankly to bring him to Anfield in 1971 for a fee of £33,000, a piece of business that would go down as one of the shrewdest in the club’s history.

What followed was a golden period for both player and club.

Keegan formed a devastating partnership with John Toshack, inspired a fierce rivalry-turned-friendship with Kevin Beattie’s Ipswich side, and became the heartbeat of a Liverpool team that ruled England and Europe.

Across six seasons at Anfield, Keegan won three First Division titles, an FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and, in 1977, the European Cup - scoring in that Rome final as Liverpool were crowned champions of Europe for the first time.

He was voted PFA Footballer of the Year in 1976, the first of two occasions he would claim the honour.

A Football League great, home and away

When Keegan left for Hamburg later in 1977, he took the reputation of the Football League with him and enhanced it further, winning the Bundesliga and being crowned European Footballer of the Year in both 1978 and 1979 - a back-to-back Ballon d’Or feat matched by precious few players before or since.

But it was on his return to English football, first with Southampton and then Newcastle United, that Keegan showed the Football League had never left him.

At St James’ Park, he inspired the Magpies to promotion from the Second Division in 1983-84, playing some of the most crowd-pleasing football the club had seen in years before hanging up his boots in 1984 as a hero on Tyneside.

For England, Keegan won 63 caps and scored 21 goals, captaining his country on more than 30 occasions and representing them at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

The Newcastle years and beyond

Keegan’s affection for Newcastle brought him back to the club in 1992, this time in the dugout, and he oversaw one of the most romantic chapters in the Premier League’s early years — steering the Magpies to promotion and then agonisingly close to the title in 1995-96 with a team that captured the imagination of the entire country.

Spells at Fulham, England Manchester City followed, along with a brief and emotional second stint back at Newcastle in 2008.

Tributes have been shared across the football world today, with EFL clubs among those paying their respects to a player whose achievements in England’s domestic game helped define an era.

Walsall FC Foundation’s logo will feature on the front of the Club’s junior shirts for a second consecutive season following a generous donation from front-of-shirt partner NoFo Brew Co.

After becoming Walsall FC’s front-of-shirt partner at the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign, NoFo donated the sponsorship space on the junior home and away shirts to the Foundation.

The donation has now been extended for the 2026/27 season, ensuring the Foundation’s logo will once again be displayed prominently on shirts worn by young Saddlers supporters.

NoFo first partnered with Walsall in November 2022, initially sponsoring the first team’s warm-up shirts, and has since supported a range of Foundation activities and community projects.

Walsall FC Foundation Director Adam Davy welcomed the continuation of the partnership and highlighted the importance of the exposure it provides.

He said: “I am delighted that we have been able to extend our work with NoFo Brew Co and collaborate with them on the shirt sponsorship for a second season.

“Once again, they have kindly donated the front of the children’s shirts for our logo to feature. This will continue to raise the profile of our Foundation and, hopefully, the wider network, while showcasing the fantastic work we do.

“We have built a brilliant relationship with the owners of NoFo, who are extremely supportive of our work. They have backed a number of Foundation activities and projects over the past few years, and we are excited to continue our wider collaboration with them throughout the 2026/27 season.”

A number of young Walsall supporters were given the opportunity to see the new shirts at the Club’s recent kit launch event, where they also met Foundation Trustee and former Saddlers striker Don Goodman.

Goodman praised the role played by Club charities throughout the football pyramid and thanked NoFo for its continued support.

He said: “The work that football clubs do in their communities is so vital throughout the football pyramid.

“I’m delighted to be a trustee for Walsall FC Foundation, and it’s brilliant to see the work the staff are doing with a range of projects across the Borough.

“To have a major sponsor like NoFo supporting the Foundation’s work like this is fantastic for the Club and community, and really helps to showcase the charity for all the supporters to see.”

 

Jarrod Bowen has ended weeks of speculation by confirming he will stay at West Ham United for their return to the Sky Bet Championship, turning down the chance to move straight back to the Premier League to instead lead Nuno Espirito Santo's promotion push at the London Stadium.

The 29-year-old, who captained the Hammers throughout a challenging campaign, had been strongly linked with a number of top-flight suitors after West Ham's 15-year stay in the Premier League ended in May. Instead, the England international has thrown his weight behind the club's rebuild, choosing to stay on and lead the promotion push from the front.

Announcing his decision, Bowen was unequivocal about what comes next, telling Sky Sports that the plan from here is simple: get the club back into the Premier League. West Ham's own statement on the decision struck a similarly single-minded tone, framing the captain's outlook as one where the destination is not in question.

His commitment has already been reflected in the build-up to next season, with Bowen fronting the launch of West Ham's 2026/27 home kit, and the club sanctioning the £85m sale of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham Hotspur in part to ensure they aren't forced into a wider fire sale of their prized assets.

Not his first rodeo in the EFL

While it's been six years since Bowen played Championship football, this is far from unfamiliar territory. He was one of the division's most feared attackers during his time at Hull City, racking up 40 goals in 94 Championship starts across two full seasons at the KCOM Stadium - a return that included a 22-goal haul in his second campaign that made him one of the hottest properties outside the top flight.

Then-Hull boss Grant McCann described Bowen during that spell as one of the best wide players in the Championship, and it was that sustained scoring form that persuaded West Ham to spend big to bring him to the London Stadium in January 2020. Bowen has spent the years since establishing himself as a Premier League regular, an England international and a European Championship runner-up - but the underlying numbers from his Hull days suggest a player who has always had the game to dominate this level.

The key to West Ham's promotion push

For a West Ham side rebuilding this summer, having a player of Bowen's calibre and experience walk back into the dressing room as captain is close to a best-case scenario. He was the club's top scorer in the Premier League last season, and Nuno Espirito Santo is expected to build his attacking framework around his captain's movement, direct running and end product from the right side.

Beyond the numbers, there's the psychological lift. Keeping a current England international at the club sends a clear signal to the rest of the division that West Ham intend to be there or thereabouts come May. Having their talisman and figurehead choose to stay and lead the charge rather than move on is the kind of statement that can galvanise an entire promotion campaign.

A must-pick for Fantasy EFL managers

With Fantasy EFL spanning all 72 clubs across the Championship, League One and League Two, there's no shortage of talent to choose from each Gameweek - and no price tag to worry about, either. The game's no-cost, seven-player-and-two-clubs format means managers can select Bowen week in, week out without it costing them a pick elsewhere in the squad.

That makes him about as close to a must-have as they come. A player of Bowen's quality dropping into the Championship, with the captaincy, penalty duties and a heavy share of set-piece responsibility likely to fall his way, should offer some of the most consistent returns anywhere in the game. Slap the captain's armband on him in a favourable Gameweek and the double points could prove decisive in mini-leagues up and down the country.

Given West Ham are expected to dominate possession against most Championship opposition, Bowen looks set to be a regular source of goal involvements - and with Fantasy EFL rewarding tackles, blocks and clearances too, his all-round game only adds to the appeal for managers building their squad around him this season.

Bromley FC Community Trust has officially launched the Bromley FC Youth Employability Hub in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The new initiative will help young people across the borough build confidence, develop skills and access opportunities in education, training and employment.

Although the official launch marked an important milestone, the Hub is already supporting young people through personalised employability guidance, one-to-one sessions, workshops, employer engagement and access to specialist services.

The launch event brought together young people, employers and community organisations to celebrate the programme and strengthen the partnerships that will create further opportunities across Bromley.

Jeff Hutton, Chief Executive Officer of Bromley FC Community Trust, said: “The launch of the Bromley FC Youth Employability Hub represents what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared commitment to creating opportunities for young people.

“At Bromley FC Community Trust, we believe football has the power to connect people, build confidence and open doors. Through the Hub, we are using that platform to help young people develop skills, access support and take positive steps towards education, training and employment.

“This is just the beginning. Together with our partners, we are creating a network of support that will continue to provide opportunities and deliver a lasting impact across Bromley for years to come.”

Throughout the event, guests heard from partner organisations and learned more about the support available through the Hub.

Young attendees were able to speak directly with employers and support organisations, explore potential opportunities and gain a better understanding of the pathways available to them.

Those already involved with the Hub also played a key role in the event by welcoming guests, sharing their experiences and introducing fellow participants to partner organisations.

Their involvement demonstrated the confidence, ownership and personal development that the programme aims to inspire.

For Bromley FC Community Trust’s Head of Operations, Alex Koroma, the project holds particular significance.

Alex began his own career through the DWP Kickstart programme, joining the Trust as a Community Operations Assistant before progressing within the organisation.

He said: “This project is particularly important to me because my own journey started through the DWP Kickstart programme. I joined Bromley FC Community Trust as a Community Operations Assistant and was given an opportunity to learn, develop and build a career within an organisation that believed in me.

“A few years ago, I was a young person looking for an opportunity. Today, I am helping to lead a programme that creates those opportunities for others.

“Having experienced first-hand how a single opportunity can change the direction of someone’s life, I understand many of the challenges faced by the young people we support and the importance of providing the right help at the right time.

“What stood out most during the event was seeing young people engaging with organisations, asking questions and building connections.

“I was particularly proud to see those already involved with the Hub welcoming attendees, sharing their experiences and introducing others to our partners. Watching them take ownership of the event and support their peers was a real reflection of the confidence and development that can follow when young people are given the right opportunities.”

Representatives from a range of organisations supporting the Hub attended the launch, including Foresters Financial UK, Mind, Clarion Housing, National Citizen Service, Barclays and Adaline Recruitment and Training.

From early breakthroughs to crucial first-team experience, the EFL has long provided the foundation for players to grow and progress to the highest level.

England's 26-man squad selected for the World Cup made a combined total of 2,195 appearances across all EFL Competitions before the tournament began. Here, we take a look at the significant impact of the EFL on the squad, breaking down the numbers and highlighting some of the key contributors to the figures — with special focus on the man who has driven England to the semi-finals, Jude Bellingham.

Bellingham: Championship graduate leading the charge

No player better embodies the EFL's role in shaping this England squad than Jude Bellingham. Long before he was inspiring a "Hey Jude" chorus from England fans in Miami, Bellingham was doing his growing up in the Sky Bet Championship, making a full season's worth of appearances for his boyhood club Birmingham City in 2020/21 before his move to Borussia Dortmund.

That grounding has paid off spectacularly in the United States, Mexico and Canada this summer. Bellingham's extra-time double sent England past Norway and into the World Cup semi-finals, taking his tally to six goals for the tournament — level with Harry Kane and among the best totals by an England player at a single World Cup. Four of his six games at the tournament have been settled by a decisive Bellingham contribution, and his knockout-round form has drawn comparisons to some of the game's greatest number 10s.

England now face Argentina in Atlanta for a place in the final, with the Three Lions appearing in a men's World Cup semi-final for the first time since 2018 — and it's a run built, in no small part, on a platform laid down in the Championship.

Sky Bet Championship

England's World Cup squad played a combined total of 974 appearances in the Championship before the tournament, with 17 of the 26 having featured in the second tier at some point in their career.

The 974 appearances comprise a mix of loan spells and breakthrough opportunities at EFL academies, as seen with players like Ezri Konsa and John Stones who came through at Charlton Athletic and Barnsley respectively.

With 135 Championship appearances to his name, Ollie Watkins is the player in the squad with the most second-tier experience, all coming with Brentford. The 30-year-old scored 46 goals at the level before moving to Aston Villa in 2020.

Sky Bet League One

A combined total of 558 League One appearances have been made by England's World Cup squad, with 9 of the 26 playing in the third tier within their careers.

172 of those 558 appearances were made by Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, who has represented Peterborough United, Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town and Wigan Athletic at the level. The centre-forward scored 24 league goals for Peterborough in the 2019/20 season, earning a move to Brentford as a result of his prolific form.

Elsewhere, all three of England's goalkeepers selected for the tournament have experience in League One. Jordan Pickford spent time at Carlisle United and Bradford City, while Dean Henderson had a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town, and James Trafford featured for both Bolton Wanderers and Accrington Stanley.

Sky Bet League Two

England's squad have played a combined total of 188 times in League Two, spread across seven different players.

Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Eberechi Eze, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney all featured in the fourth tier earlier in their careers.

Watkins made his breakthrough in the professional game with Exeter City in League Two, playing 71 times for the Grecians at the level.

Elsewhere, Elliot Anderson enjoyed a profitable loan spell with Bristol Rovers in the second half of the 2021/22 season, scoring 7 times, including on the final day as they secured promotion to League One.

EFL Cup

All 26 of the players named in England's squad have featured in the EFL Cup in their careers, combining to play a total of 377 times in the competition.

Of those 26, 11 players have won the trophy at least once, including Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly who was the star of the 2025/26 final. The 21-year-old scored a brace in a 2-0 win against Arsenal to lift his first silverware since breaking into City's first team.

Fellow Manchester City player John Stones has won the EFL Cup five times in his career, only bettered by Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero.

EFL Trophy

The EFL Trophy has long served as a vital platform for nurturing young talent, offering emerging players a pathway into the professional game.

Of the 26 players named in the squad, 12 made their professional debuts in the competition, underlining its continued importance to player development and exposure.

Notably, Arsenal's Premier League-winning duo of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka made their debuts in the Trophy, as well as Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers.

Colchester United manager Danny Cowley visited a Team Talk session earlier this year to show his support for the programme and the participants who attend each week.

Team Talk is a free weekly initiative that combines relaxed football with social time, helping adults improve both their mental and physical wellbeing in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Each session includes a 30-minute social element followed by an hour of football, giving participants the opportunity to talk, connect with others and stay active.

During his visit, Danny spent time chatting with participants and learning more about their experiences of the programme before joining in with the match. His involvement brought a real lift to the session and helped create a memorable experience for everyone who attended.

Head of Health & Inclusion, Louis Garbett, said: “It’s so important that people feel supported in looking after their mental health, and having Danny come in, share his experiences and engage with participants really reinforces that message in a powerful and relatable way.”

Team Talk continues to grow as a supportive space for adults across Colchester, helping people build confidence, form friendships and enjoy the benefits of regular physical activity.

By combining the power of football with meaningful social connection, the programme is helping to make a positive difference in the local community.

Jude Bellingham has continued to underline his status as one of world football's brightest stars as England marched into the World Cup semi-finals — and once again it is a story that began in the EFL.

Alongside captain Harry Kane, Bellingham has been central to England's progress, helping fire the Three Lions through the group stage and every knockout round so far with a series of defining performances.

Remarkably, every England goal at the World Cup has come from either Bellingham or Kane.

After scoring in England's opening 4-2 victory over Croatia, both players featured in a frustrating goalless draw against Ghana before finding the net again in the win over Panama that sealed top spot in the group.

Then came the knockout rounds.

England appeared to be heading for a shock exit in the Round of 32 when DR Congo held a 1-0 lead deep into the closing stages, only for Kane to score twice late on and complete a dramatic comeback victory.

Just days later at the iconic Azteca Stadium, Bellingham scored twice and Kane converted from the penalty spot as England claimed a thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico in the Last 16 — a result that will rank among the nation's greatest World Cup victories.

And in the quarter-final, it was Bellingham again. Andreas Schjelderup put Norway ahead in Miami, but Bellingham levelled before half-time and then struck the winner three minutes into extra-time, pouncing on a rebound after his own long-range effort came back off the Norwegian goalkeeper, to send England through to a first World Cup semi-final since 2018.

Together, Bellingham and Kane have now scored all but one of England's goals at the tournament.

It is a remarkable achievement, but perhaps not surprising when viewed through an EFL lens.

Before the Champions League medals, before Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, before England captaincies and Ballon d'Or conversations, both players were forged in the EFL.

Bellingham's education came in the Sky Bet Championship, where as a 16-year-old Birmingham City midfielder he learned to cope with the physicality, intensity and relentlessness of one of football's most demanding leagues. The Blues Academy graduate became the Club's youngest-ever player, won the EFL Young Player of the Season award and quickly established himself as one of the country's brightest prospects.

"It was almost like a month of dreams," Bellingham said of his breakthrough. "It's hard to deny that it's one of the best leagues in the world competitively."

Kane's route was different but no less influential.

Long before becoming England's captain and all-time leading goalscorer, he served his apprenticeship through EFL loan spells with Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City.

Whether it was muddy League One pitches, Championship survival battles or promotion races, each stop helped develop the mentality that has made him one of the world's most consistent forwards.

"Those experiences were massive," Kane told the EFL. "Not just in terms of developing my skills but also the mental side of it."

Bellingham inspires England past Norway to reach the Semi-Finals

The quarter-final against Norway was the toughest test yet of that mentality. Kane was caught in possession inside his own half early on, and Schjelderup's resulting effort from the left flew in off the post to give the Scandinavians a shock lead. Norway continued to press, with Alexander Sørloth firing over from a good position and Jordan Pickford — making a record-breaking appearance for England at the tournament — getting down well to deny Martin Ødegaard.

Bellingham drew England level before the break, and the game swung again early in extra-time. Norway had a goal chalked off in the second half after review showed Erling Haaland had fouled an England player in the build-up, and with the tie still level after 90 minutes, Bellingham needed just three minutes of extra-time to settle it, pouncing on a rebound after the Norwegian goalkeeper could only parry a long-range effort.

It capped another outstanding individual tournament for the Birmingham City academy graduate. Bellingham became the first midfielder to score four or more goals in a World Cup campaign for England after his brace against Mexico in the previous round, and his extra-time winner against Norway made it six for the tournament — level with Kane's own tally.

England will now face either Switzerland or defending champions Argentina in the semi-final, with the Three Lions aiming to end six decades without a men's World Cup title.

As England continue their World Cup journey, those EFL roots remain evident.

The resilience Kane showed to rescue victory against DR Congo. The composure Bellingham displayed under pressure at the Azteca. The nerve he then showed again against Norway. The consistency both have shown across six matches.

These are qualities developed through playing meaningful games, dealing with setbacks and learning to perform under pressure.

Exactly the type of experiences the EFL has provided generations of England internationals.

More than 100 primary school pupils from across Lancashire took part in a football-themed STEM Competition Day at Deepdale, designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technology specialists. 

The event marked the culmination of the 18-week STEM United programme, which has been delivered in local schools by Preston North End Community and Education Trust (PNECET), Bolton Wanderers in the Community (BWitC) and Blackburn Rovers Community Trust (BRCT). 

Coordinated by EFL in the Community through government catalyst funding and delivered by STEM specialists Creative Hut, the programme uses football-inspired activities to engage pupils in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. 

Jake Blackburn, Head of Schools at PNECET, explained how football provides a powerful way to engage young people who may not otherwise be interested in STEM-related activities. 

“Sport is a powerful tool that helps us engage and support young people who may not normally take part in these kinds of activities. The connection people have with their football club helps capture their attention and opens the door to new opportunities.” 

Izzie Bradley-Ray, Insight and Impact Development Manager at EFL in the Community, said the programme was designed to help children overcome barriers to STEM learning and careers. 

“Football Club charities know their communities incredibly well and have strong relationships with local schools. By using the power of the badge, we can make STEM more accessible and relatable for young people.  

“While STEM and football might not seem an obvious combination, it helps bring the subjects to life.” 

Representatives from BAE Systems, based in nearby Samlesbury, supported the event as STEM ambassadors, helping pupils explore the wide range of career opportunities available within the sector. 

Graduate Systems Engineer Sam Ricketts said engaging children through football was an effective way to inspire future STEM professionals. 

“I loved football growing up, so an event like this would have really captured my imagination. It’s fantastic to see local football clubs working together to inspire young people in their communities.” 

Teachers also praised the initiative for giving pupils the chance to learn outside the classroom. Assistant Headteacher Joe Noblet, from Penwortham Primary School, said the combination of STEM and football was a winning formula. 

“Many of our pupils are Preston North End supporters, so when you add a sporting element to STEM subjects, they are engaged straight away. They were excited to take part, and even more excited when they found out the event was being held at Deepdale.” 

Penwortham Primary School Year 6 pupil Elliot David Lavin, who hopes to become a scientist, agreed that the football club's involvement helped attract and engage children. 

“It’s a big football club and that makes a difference. If it was organised by someone less well known, I don’t think as many children would have been interested.” 

The STEM United programme highlights how football clubs can play an important role in inspiring young people to explore future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. 

As a father to two young boys with limitless energy, James Williamson, Community Communications Manager at Fleetwood Town Community Trust, is a regular spectator at his children’s sporting events.

Having spent much of that time watching football and athletics, James was keen to see how Fleetwood Town Community Trust’s boxing sessions would engage a lively group of five to nine-year-olds with mixed levels of ability.

The visit was the latest in a series of trips designed to strengthen his understanding of programme delivery and the impact these sessions have in local communities.

Held at Fleetwood Amateur Boxing Club, the setting immediately captured the children’s attention. Belts, gloves and framed photographs lined the walls, while the Olympic-sized ring provided plenty of visual inspiration.

The sessions form part of TrySport, a community outreach programme funded by Wyre Council and delivered in partnership with Fleetwood Town Community Trust, Fylde Coast YMCA and Wyre Moving More.

TrySport was created to provide accessible sporting opportunities for children and young people across Wyre, from Fleetwood to harder-to-reach communities such as Knott End and Garstang.

The programme gives young people the chance to try new or less familiar sports, including boxing, while increasing overall participation. A key focus is engaging those who may not usually take part in sport.

Sessions take place on different days and in different locations, recognising that barriers to participation can vary from family to family. Most sessions are offered free of charge.

Ryan Willetts, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at Fleetwood Town Community Trust, said: “Events like the TrySport boxing sessions are all about giving young people accessible opportunities to be active, build confidence and try something new in a safe and positive environment.

“As a Football Club charity, we’re in a unique position to engage communities through the power of sport and create experiences that support both physical and mental wellbeing for children and families.”

One of the first things to stand out for James was the way the lead coach held the respect and full attention of all 25 participants. This was no mean feat, as anyone who’s coached kids’ sport will tell you.  

From circuit training to bag work, the activities were short, sharp and energetic, leaving little time for boredom. Importantly, each child was able to take part at their own pace, meaning nobody was held back or placed under unnecessary pressure.

Additional helpers were positioned around the gym to provide encouragement, support and motivation whenever needed.

One parent said her child “absolutely loved” the sessions and “doesn’t stop talking about them”.

She added: “They’re really well organised and welcoming. They give children the chance to build confidence, stay active, learn boxing and meet new people. Opportunities like this are so important for families in the community.”

As England prepare for their World Cup Quarter‑Final against Norway on Saturday, attention has turned to the coaching team supporting Thomas Tuchel, including assistant coach Anthony Barry.

Barry has become a familiar presence to viewers through his regular half‑time television interviews during England’s matches.

His path to the national team was shaped across the EFL, where he built the foundations of his understanding of the game as a reliable, hard‑working midfielder.

After progressing through the academies at Everton and Coventry City, he made his senior breakthrough at Accrington Stanley in the National League.

He then spent three seasons with Yeovil Town in Sky Bet League One, a spell that included a Play‑Off Final appearance at Wembley Stadium in 2007.

During his time with the Glovers, he developed strong positional awareness and an understanding of structured team play that would later influence his coaching.

Barry returned to Accrington Stanley later in his career while beginning work on his coaching qualifications.

He combined his playing responsibilities with early analysis work and session planning as he transitioned towards coaching.

His first major coaching role came at Wigan Athletic, where he joined Paul Cook’s backroom staff after retiring.

His attention to detail, set‑piece knowledge and communication skills quickly earned recognition beyond the Club.

That reputation led to a move to Chelsea, where he initially worked under Frank Lampard.

He remained part of the coaching team when Thomas Tuchel arrived and contributed to the Club’s Champions League success in 2021.

Tuchel valued Barry’s strengths and took him to Bayern Munich when he moved to Germany.

Barry is now part of England’s coaching setup as the Three Lions aim to end 60 years without lifting the World Cup.

Yasmin Diamond CB is to be appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director on the EFL Board.

Yasmin brings extensive board-level and executive leadership experience, most recently serving as an Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Remuneration Committee at the Rugby Football Union (RFU), where she provided independent oversight and support for the organisation’s governance, strategy and stakeholder engagement.

She also served as a Trustee of the British Council and a Board Member of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, and is currently Executive Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs at HG Hotels & Resorts PLC.

In 2011, she was awarded a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the New Year’s Honours List in recognition of her career in government communications, which included roles as Director of Communications for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Home Office.

EFL Chair, Rick Parry said: "We are delighted to welcome Yasmin to the EFL Board. She brings a wealth of experience together with an impressive track record in governance, strategic leadership, and stakeholder engagement. Her experience of operating at board level within high-profile and complex organisations will be of enormous value to the EFL and our 72 Clubs.”

EFL Independent Non-Executive Director, Yasmin Diamond CB said: “I am delighted to join the Board of the EFL. Football has a unique and special power to bring people together and create a sense of pride and belonging in communities across the UK.

Yasmin’s appointment follows a thorough recruitment process conducted by the EFL Board and will take effect from August’s Board Meeting once formally ratified by the Board. She will serve an initial three-year term as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

The EFL Board is made up of Rick Parry (EFL Chair), Trevor Birch (EFL Chief Executive), Championship representatives Peter Ridsdale (Preston North End), Neil Bausor (Middlesbrough) and Zoe Webber (Norwich City), League One representatives Neerav Parekh (Barnsley) and Darragh MacAnthony (Peterborough United) and League Two representative Charles Grant (Crewe Alexandra), with Yasmin joining Caroline Artis as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

Bristol Rovers Community Trust has successfully launched the first women-only Rebound with Rovers session, expanding its award-winning mental health football programme to provide dedicated support for women across Bristol.

Rebound with Rovers is a free mental health football programme for adults aged 18 and over experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges. The initiative uses football to encourage physical activity, reduce social isolation, and improve wellbeing in a safe, welcoming environment.

The introduction of women-only sessions reflects the growing need for dedicated spaces where women can participate in sport while accessing mental health support. Alongside football activities, each session includes time for refreshments and informal conversation, helping participants build supportive relationships both on and off the pitch.

The expansion has been made possible through funding from Sport England, secured by Bristol Rovers Community Trust's Head of Mental Health, Costa Chard. The funding enables the Trust to deliver a women-focused programme that creates opportunities to discuss issues including perinatal and postpartum depression, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other challenges that can affect women's mental health, within an environment led by women, for women.

The launch has also been supported by organisations including Her Game Too and Bristol Girls Can, alongside members of Bristol Rovers Women's First Team, highlighting a shared commitment to making football more inclusive and accessible.

Costa Chard said: "One of the things I'm most proud of about Rebound is seeing the impact it has on people's lives. Our sessions don't just help attendees improve their skills; they also build confidence, create friendships, and open up new opportunities.

"To date, five of our attendees have become coaches, which is an incredible achievement. Helen was our very first attendee, and she will now be coaching our new women-only Rebound session. Seeing that journey from participant to coach is fantastic and shows what's possible when people are given the chance to grow.

"Thanks to Sport England, we're now able to offer this women-only session, and I'm excited to see even more women benefit from everything Rebound has to offer."

Coach Helen Cox added: "It's finally here! Rebound for women. I'm excited to be leading these sessions. Come along, have fun and improve your mental wellbeing. I'm looking forward to meeting you."

Birmingham City have added one of the Sky Bet Championship's most experienced defenders to their backline after Dael Fry ended his two-decade-long association with his boyhood Club Middlesbrough for a new challenge in the Midlands.

But what exactly will the Teesider bring to St Andrews, and how vital could he be in Birmingham's push to return to the Premier League?

Teeside prodigy to Championship mainstay

Dael Fry has spent his entire footballing life on Teesside. Spotted playing for his local side, Cleveland Juniors, he joined Middlesbrough at just seven years old and progressed through every level of the club’s academy.

By 18, he had earned his senior debut and wasted no time making an impression.

Thrown into the starting XI at the Riverside, Fry delivered a composed, assured performance that saw him named Player of the Match.

While his appearances were initially limited, a breakthrough came in the 2018/19 campaign, with Fry making 39 appearances across all competitions, and he remained a mainstay at the heart of the Boro backline thereafter.

Last season, he was a key figure in Boro's push for promotion and led the team out at Wembley in the Play-Off Final, although they ultimately fell at the final hurdle against Hull City.

What kind of defender is he?

Birmingham City fans can expect a towering presence who is equally good in the air as he is composed playing out from the back.

Fry made 123 headed clearances in the Championship last season, the most of any Middlesbrough player and a remarkable 56 more than his defensive partner Luke Ayling, who ranked second.

He isn’t the flashiest defender you’ll watch, but he is one who delivers. Fry’s game is built on reliability, concentration and the willingness to do the unseen work that gets teams over the line.

Managers value him because he rarely falls short of a solid standard and never shies away from responsibility.

Fry first captained Middlesbrough during the 2019/20 season and has long been viewed as a steadying influence in the dressing room.

Birmingham’s rebuild has prioritised experience, stability and Championship know-how. Fry fits that blueprint perfectly.

Following his move to the Second City, he spoke about how boss Chris Davies impressed him and how the Blues' ambitious targets ultimately drew him in.

“I like how he [Davies] spoke and learning the ambition from the club and, like I said, the manager spoke really highly of it. That’s what drove me towards coming here," he told the Club.

“He spoke of having experience in the group, and how I’ve played 300 games, that’s what he wanted to add to the group, a bit of experience, a bit of leadership to make sure standards are high.

“It’s very interesting to see how ambitious the club is, obviously, they got taken over by new owners, and they were very ambitious. It was nice to see what they have installed into the club and the big names that are involved – the documentary was very good – and it’s a big part of why I came here as well.

“It’s very different, new faces, new people to please. The people at Middlesbrough were absolutely excellent, but it’s a new start for me, a fresh challenge, and I think I’ll get an extra ten per cent out of myself. It’s a club on the up and hopefully this season we can make many memories together.”

For Watford and Australian international Nestory Irankunda, the idea of leading his country into the World Cup knockout stages a few years ago would once have sounded impossibly far-fetched.

Back then, the Tanzanian-born winger was still a raw but exciting talent at Adelaide United, having climbed through their youth ranks.

His breakout A League season saw him register 16 goals, eight assists, and win the Young Player of the Year award, a return that made him impossible to ignore.

European giants Bayern Munich moved quickly, convinced they were securing a forward who had quietly developed into one of Australia’s most gifted youngsters.

It capped a dream summer for the then 18-year-old, who also made his senior international debut for the Socceroos in a World Cup qualification match.

Irankunda adapted well in Germany, earning a place in the senior squad alongside some of the world’s best, including England striker Harry Kane.

A loan spell in Switzerland during the second half of the season proved important.

Consistent minutes at Grasshopper accelerated his development and highlighted how important consistent game time would be for his next step.

That was when Watford made their move, securing him on a five-year deal last year, a signing that would soon look inspired.

Irankunda quickly became a consistent part of the Hornets attack, using his pace and direct style to stretch defences.

He burst onto the Sky Bet Championship stage with three goal contributions in his first four games, immediately showing why Watford were so keen to bring him in.

Operating from the left, his explosive pace has troubled full-backs across the division, and once he is in stride, stopping him becomes extremely difficult.

His threat from set pieces is equally impressive, with technique and power that already place him among the strongest dead ball specialists in the league, and it is no surprise he has become one of Watford’s key players.

Even casual English football fans will have seen clips of his free kicks circulating online, moments that have helped cement him as one of the EFL’s brightest young stars and attracted interest from Premier League clubs.

Irankunda has taken that form onto the international stage, becoming one of Australia’s potent attacking outlets.

In their opening World Cup group match against Turkey, he became the youngest Australian ever to set a record at the tournament.

His strike proved decisive in securing the win that ultimately pushed the Socceroos into the Round of 32.

That result set up a meeting with Egypt in Dallas, a contest that is difficult to predict.

A victory would be monumental. The Socceroos have never won a knockout match at a World Cup, and achieving it now, with Irankunda at the heart, would mark a landmark moment for both the nation and the Watford attacker whose rise has been extraordinary.

For 79-year-old Robert, attending the Trust's Low-Level Fitness sessions has been life-changing following the loss of his wife of 52 years.

"I got involved with the class because of a lack of fitness and suffering with depression after my wife of 52 years passed away," he said.

"The benefits from attending are that I have something to look forward to, plus making new friends and feeling much better overall.

"I have learnt to just keep going and try your best no matter what your circumstances."

By bringing people together through inclusive community programmes, Rotherham United Community Trust continues to demonstrate the positive impact football clubs can have beyond the pitch, helping ensure that no one in their local community has to face loneliness alone.

The contrast between the two players today mirrors the evolution of elite footballers over time.

In 2009, Ronaldo was a blistering wide attacker and Modrić a gifted young creator still finding his feet in English football. Today, Ronaldo is an experienced penalty-box marksman, while Modrić is the masterful midfield orchestrator whose intelligence continues to shape games at the highest level.
