Manchester City moved a step closer to another Wembley appearance after securing a 2-0 first-leg victory over holders Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park.

New signing Antoine Semenyo continued his dream start in City colours, opening the scoring with a well-taken finish at the back post.

The forward, who joined from Bournemouth last week, showed his sharp instincts to convert after Bernardo Silva flicked on Jeremy Doku’s inviting cross.

City, eight-time winners of the competition, had to withstand early pressure as Newcastle twice struck the woodwork in quick succession.

James Trafford tipped Yoane Wissa’s looping header onto the bar before Bruno Guimaraes rattled the frame with a powerful strike moments later.

Wissa also had a golden chance to put the hosts ahead but fired over from close range.

Those missed opportunities proved costly as City grew into the game and found their breakthrough.

Deep into stoppage time, substitute Rayan Cherki added a second with a composed finish, giving Pep Guardiola’s side a commanding advantage heading into the return leg at the Etihad on 4 February.
