Loneliness is a prevalent concern among older people, and the phenomena is often interwoven with the growing societal challenge of ageism.
Watford FC Community Sports and Education Trust recognises the importance of challenging lingering negative stereotypes and biases as they continue to take action against ageism – in turn minimising the laundry list of associated negative sentiment in its wake, including loneliness.
In celebrating ageing, and encouraging others to do the same, the Trust recently joined forces with Age Without Limits – a local charity working in the community to support older people – to host an event dedicated to stamping out this discriminatory treatment for good.
The event, which took place on Wednesday 11 June at the Meriden Community Centre, Watford, was an extension of the Trust’s existing ‘Extra-Time’ programme, which each week provides a safe space for those aged 55 and over to come together, meet others, and engage in physical activity. The day comprised a series of activities, from carpet bowls and chair exercises, to opportunities for attendees to have a chat between friends.

Various guests, who will remain anonymous, offered their reflections on the day: "I often find people speak to me differently now that I’ve gotten older, and I find it frustrating. Thank you for celebrating ageing. It was great to join in on the other activities today, it’s made me realise I can still get involved in new things."
While another guest later added: "Today has been lovely. It made me think that I would love to do more exercise. Having the table of refreshments was great too, it made me choose the healthier options because I had just done the seated exercise. It's nice to celebrate getting older instead of seeing it as a negative thing."
Local Councillor, Sam Summer, who was also among the participants on the day, shared his gratitude to the Trust for their commitment to the cause: “Age is just a number. Every day is an opportunity to challenge yourself and celebrate the strength that comes with experience. We’re grateful that Watford FC CSE Trust organises weekly sessions and events like today for adults. This also tackles loneliness and helps improve their physical strength."
