Fantasy EFL: Who to captain for gameweek 23

Fantasy EFL Gameweek 23 gets underway on Saturday with three lunch time matches across the country. There are only 16 matches due to FA Cup commitments, which sees a reduced schedule. The GW will wrap up on Wednesday evening with Blackburn Rovers welcoming Portsmouth to Ewood Park at 19:45.

In this article, we’ve provided a synopsis of the potential captaincy candidates in each position. There’s never been a more important week to choose your captaincy wisely with a reduced schedule!

Defenders

Mickey Demetriou - Crewe Alexandra (vs Swindon Town A)

One of the standout options for captaincy is Crewe’s captain, Mickey Demetriou (D). The number five is the highest-scoring asset in FEFL, scoring 184 points in 23 matches. Despite only keeping eight clean sheets (+40), the centre-back has eight double-digit hauls this season, and is a consistent contributor both defensively and offensively. Facing 22nd-placed Swindon Town (A), 16.8% of managers are convinced a haul is on the cards.

Carl Piergianni - Stevenage (vs Burton Albion H)

The second top defensive option is Boro’s captain, Carl Piergianni (D). The second-highest scorer this GW with 164 points, the centre-back has been a rock this campaign. He’s in remarkable form, and hasn’t blanked since GW12. Boro are on a three-match clean sheet streak and host bottom-placed Burton Albion next.

Midfielders

Davis Keillor-Dunn - Barnsley (vs Northampton Town A)

Barnsley’s Davis Keillor-Dunn (M) is an excellent option the week. The talented out-of-position MID, playing up front, scoring 41 points in four GW’s. He has nine goals and two assists to his name in 23 games, totalling 132 points. The Tykes take on the Cobblers (A) next, who have shipped 39 goals in 25 games.

Alex Gilbey - MK Dons (vs Carlisle United A)

Although Jack Lankester (M) of Crewe is a great option, the threat of rotation is a concern. Therefore, MK Dons’ Alex Gilbey (M) is the top Fantasy scorer for the Dons, banking 132 points in 23 matches. He’s scored nine goals and provided two assists, alongside providing nine interceptions (+18). They face the 24th-placed Cumbrians away up next, who they’ve beaten three consecutive times. Gilbey scored in the reverse fixture in August at Stadium MK.

Forwards

Nathan Lowe - Walsall (vs Tranmere Rovers H)

Walsall’s star loanee, Nathan Lowe (F), is the best forward to wear the armband this week. The number seven has been electric in League Two, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists in 21, scoring 142 points. The striker has five goals in four league matches, despite being owned by only 5.6%. Many expect the talisman to continue his impressive form against Rovers.

David McGoldrick - Notts County (vs Grimsby Town A)

The 37-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down in League Two, and is in good form for the Magpies. He’s scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 21, totalling 103 points. Last time out, he scored a brace against Swindon Town (H), totalling 14 points. Owned by less than 1% of Fantasy managers, he's consistently scored double-digit goals in each of the last three league campaigns. This level of consistent scoring across the top four tiers of English football makes him a strong consideration!
