Cardiff City FC Community Foundation are taking innovative thinking to new heights after launching their new ‘Stadium of Tomorrow’ competition – a creative challenge designed for pupils across South Wales that uses Minecraft to impart sustainability and environmental teachings.

The principle of the contest is for students to ‘reimagine a sustainable football stadium of the future’, encouraging young people to adopt environmentally friendly practices through leveraging the power of football and game-based education.

The Community Foundation engaged with pupils of their partner primary schools, receiving entries from Brynnau Primary School, Pentrebane Primary School, Bryn Deri Primary School, and Christ the King R.C. Primary School.

With sustainability at its core, students delve into innovative ways to reduce environmental impact and enhance the matchday experience through one of the world’s most popular video games.

Scored against three key indicators, including creativity, sustainability, and design functionality, teams developed detailed stadiums featuring ecotechnologies, including under-pitch rainwater collection systems, solar panels, electric transport, and community food zones powered by local producers.

Through pairing football-themed resources and real-world issues, and drawing inspiration from Cardiff City FC, the Community Foundation aims to nurture environmental awareness and conversation among the younger generation to ultimately promote a greener, more sustainable future for us all.

Winners received a range of prizes, including the CCFC Stadium of Tomorrow Cup, Cardiff City FC Stadium tours, certificates, and 2025/26 matchday tickets.

Luke Jenkins-Jones, Primary Education Coordinator at the Community Foundation, said:

“This project has shown how football can be a powerful tool for learning. Pupils didn’t just build stadiums, they developed problem-solving skills, explored sustainability, and connected with the values of the Club.

“We’ve been amazed by the ideas pupils came up with — from renewable energy systems to inclusive fan experiences. We’re looking forward to seeing how we can develop this competition in the upcoming season.”

The new digital competition aligns and supports the Community Foundation’s unwavering commitment to sustainability through enhancing eco-friendly education and skills development.

As it continues to grow in years to come, the Community Foundation have promised to extend their reach among local schools with a view to ‘make learning relevant and rooted in the values of sustainability, creativity, and football’.
