Birmingham City secure promotion back to the Championship

Birmingham City have this evening confirmed their immediate promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship.

The Blues needed a win to be the first EFL side to confirm their promotion in the 24/25 season and overcame Peterborough United, the side they'll face in the Vertu Trophy Final this weekend, by two goals to one.

Goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman cancelled out Kwame Poku's fierce strike for Peterborough to take Chris Davies' side to promotion in his first season as manager.

Sky Bet Championship

There was yet more drama in the Championship title race as two of the top three dropped points on a night filled with drama.

Having dropped to 3rd place at the weekend, Leeds United returned to the top of the table with a 1-0 win over play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough. Dan James' early strike was the only goal of the game as Leeds returned to winning ways on the road.

Sheffield United suffered a second defeat in a row at the hands of Millwall, the Blades falling to 3rd after a 1-0 defeat courtesy of Josh Coburn's strike.

Burnley go 2nd on goal difference after playing out a 0-0 draw against a battling Derby County side.

4th-placed Sunderland also drew 0-0, taking a point on the road at Norwich that guarantees them a play-off place come the end of the season.

In a crunch clash between two sides competing for the play-offs, Bristol City snatched a dramatic 97th-minute winner over West Bromwich Albion. The Robins now sit in 5th place, pushing for their first play-off finish since 2008!

Watford kept their hopes for a play-off place alive with a narrow 1-0 win over Hull City thanks to Moussa Sissoko's clever flick.

There were late goals in the other three games this evening, with Blackburn, Luton and Cardiff City almost snatching late equalisers. Blackburn came from 2-0 down against Sheffield Wednesday to avoid a 6th defeat in a row, whilst Luton and Cardiff's rescued draws leave them both still in the relegation places.

Sky Bet League One

Despite picking up an important three points on the roadat Huddersfield Town, Wycombe Wanderers could not stop Birmingham City from clinching promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship. The Chairboys now face a direct battle with Wrexham for the final remaining automatic promotion place, a battle in which Wrexham currently hold a 3-point advantage.

Bolton Wanderers dropped out of the play-off places after a home defeat at the hands of Rotherham United, Sam Nombe's thunderous strike clinching the win for The Millers.

Bolton are replaced in the play-offs by Reading, who put in an impressive performance to beat bottom club Shrewsbury Town 3-1 thanks to goals from Wing, Ehibhatiomhan and Campbell.

Bolton and Huddersfield's defeats opened the door for Leyton Orient to gain ground, with The O's playing out a thrilling 3-2 win over Mansfield Town. Star striker Charlie Kelman chipped in with a brace to take his tally to 17 league goals this season.

Exeter struck a second-half equaliser to draw 1-1 at home to Wigan Athletic, leaving both sides just out of reach of the relegation zone.

Sky Bet League Two

In League Two's only game of the evening, Chesterfield's play-off hopes took a hit as they drew with Gillingham.

The Gills opened up an early lead through Elliott Nevitt's calm finish and looked to be holding on to that lead until the 77th minute.

Veteran goalscorer Will Grigg met a low cross and fired in Chesterfield's equaliser to condemn Gareth Ainsworth's side to their 6th draw on the bounce.
