Who were the last five teams to win back-to-back promotions from League Two?

Last season saw Wrexham seal back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One in the space of two seasons. Can either of this seasons newcomers to the EFL – Chesterfield and Bromley – repeat the feat?

We take a look back at the last five teams to secure consecutive promotions from League Two:

2023/24

Wrexham

Wrexham sealed promotion back to the EFL following a 15-year exile at the end of the 2022/23 season, having gone head-to-head with Notts County for the title before clinching pole position with a record points tally.

But they weren’t done there. The Welsh Club made it consecutive achievements when they beat Forest Green Rovers 6-0 on home soil last season – as Red Dragons boss Phil Parkinson added a fifth promotion to his CV – confirming their League One status for 2024/25 and finishing in second place.

2015/16

Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers’ 2014/15 season ended at Wembley Stadium as the Gas – who finished the regular season in second – beat third-placed Grimsby Town on spot-kicks to win the National League Play-Off Final.

Similarly, the following campaign went right down to the wire. It looked as though it would be Play-Offs once again as Rovers headed into the final day needing a win of their own, but also relying upon results elsewhere. Lee Brown’s 92nd minute winner against Dagenham and Redbridge saw Darrell Clarke’s side sneak into the top three.

2011/12

Crawley Town

Crawley Town would be an EFL team for the first time in the West Sussex Club’s existence after Steve Evans’ side were crowned National League champions in 2010/11 with five games of the season to spare.

And Evans’ departure from Broadfield with just a month remaining of the 2011/12 season could have thrown a spanner in the works for Crawley, who were pushing for successive promotions to League One, but caretaker Craig Brewster got the Reds over the line with a 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley.

2010/11

Stevenage

Stevenage were an EFL team for the first time after boss Graham Westley, in his second stint at the Club, guided Boro to the National League title in 2009/10 with victory over Kidderminster Harriers.

And in 2010/11, Stevenage – who occupied the bottom half of the table in January – made a late play for consecutive promotions. Westley’s side scaled the standings to finish in sixth, going on to beat Torquay United at Old Trafford in the League Two Play-Off Final and make further history.

2008/09

Exeter City

Exeter City put their Play-Off heartbreak in 2007 behind them when the Grecians came up against Cambridge United in the 2008 Final at the National Stadium, running out 1-0 winners over the U’s to return to League Two.

Six years after dropping out of the pyramid – relegated from the League in 2003 – the Devon outfit made an immediate return to League One, finishing as runners-up to champions Brentford in 2008/09. It also marked the Club’s highest league finish in 15 years as they made it back-to-back feats.
