Chelsea's Carabao Cup road to Wembley

It's been no easy route to the Carabao Cup Final 2024 for Chelsea, who entered the competition in Round Two and made it all the way to Wembley.

Here, we take a look back at how the Blues have reached the showpiece...

Round Two

Chelsea 2-1 AFC Wimbledon

Mauricio Pochettino's men had to come from behind against League Two opposition AFC Wimbledon to avoid a shock a shock defeat in the early throes of the competition.

Chelsea found themselves 1-0 down inside the opening 20 minutes of the game after the visitors were awarded a penalty, which was duly dispatched by Wombles forward James Tilley.

However, the West Londoners fought back, levelling proceedings on the stroke of half time. Noni Madueke converted from the spot to open his account at Stamford Bridge.

In the second half, the hosts completed the comeback. World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez got his first goal in Chelsea colours as he capitalised on a defensive error to seal a 2-1 win for the Blues.

Round Three

Chelsea 1-0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Back on home turf in Round Three, Chelsea locked horns with Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion, as a slender score-line saw the Blues through to Round Four.

Nicolas Jackson netted the only goal of the game early in the second period and it was his strike that separated the two sides in the end.

The striker finished off a well-worked team move with 50 minutes on the clock, assisted by summer signing Cole Palmer, who impressed on his full debut for the Club.

Round Four

Chelsea 2-0 Blackburn Rovers

Chelsea booked their place in the Quarter-Final as they ran out 2-0 winners over Blackburn Rovers in Round Four, as boss Pochettino stamped his intent on the competition.

The five-time League Cup winners struck either side of the break as Frenchman Benoit Badiashile broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark to hand the Blues the lead heading into the interval.

Raheem Sterling doubled the advantage in the second half to put Chelsea in the driving seat, taking the West Londoners a step closer to glory.

Quarter-Final

Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle United*

It needed penalties to decide who would progress to the final four between Chelsea and Newcastle United in the Quarter-Final, but it was the Blues who prevailed in the shootout.

Pochettino's side were close to bowing out of the competition after falling behind early on in the contest when Callum Wilson made it 1-0 to the Magpies.

The Blues left it late as Mykhailo Mudryk - who put in a Player of the Round performance - equalised in the 92nd minute to force the tie to spot-kicks in dramatic fashion.

Kieran Trippier's miss and Djordje Petrovic's save from Matt Ritchie saw Chelsea claim a 4-2 win on penalties.

Semi-Final (First Leg)

Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea

Chelsea found themselves trailing at the halfway point in the Semi-Final against Middlesbrough after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Championship team at the Riverside Stadium.

Despite having their chances, the West Londoners were beaten by Hayden Hackney's first-half effort as Boro took a narrow lead into the second leg in the capital.

Semi-Final (Second Leg)

Chelsea 6-1 Middlesbrough

A date at Wembley beckoned as Chelsea put six past Middlesbrough in the second leg of the Semi-Final at Stamford Bridge to reverse their fortunes and cruise through to the Final.

Chelsea scored four times in a ruthless first-half display through a Jonny Howson own goal, along with strikes from Enzo Fernandez, Axel Disasi and Cole Palmer.

Palmer's second and Noni Madueke completed the rout after the interval, before Morgan Rogers grabbed a consolation goal for Boro as it finished 6-2 on aggregate.
