Musician and Newcastle United fan Andrew Cushin ahead of Wembley!

25 February 2023

Ahead of the Carabao Cup Final we caught up with musician Andrew Cushin to talk about his beloved Newcastle United.

Firstly, how excited are you for the Wembley final?

I’m incredibly excited. We’ve waited so long for this man, I’m buzzing! The whole city is on an all-time high! Win or lose we’ve got to be proud of Newcastle.

How did you become a Newcastle United fan?

My dad was obviously a massive Newcastle fan. I think if I wasn’t a Newcastle fan my life would be canny boring, it’s the law to show some interest in wor club.

What are your earliest memories of watching the club?

I remember my first game was against Stoke City at home. We went 2-0 up at half-time and drew the game 2-2. I remember the disappointment on the bus home at the fact we threw away 3 points. It’s also the game that made me want to play football. I began watching Shay Given a lot after that. He became my footballing idol.

Who were your Newcastle United heroes growing up?

Shay Given, Pavel Srnicek, Paul Gascoigne, Alan Shearer.. the list is endless but, with me being a goalkeeper, I was always drawn to some the of great ‘keepers we’ve had over the years.

What’s your favourite Newcastle United memory?

I remember being at the game when we lifted the Championship trophy in 2010 against Ipswich Town. The Europa League nights in were also full of good memories with my family and friends too.

With your busy schedule, do you get to many games?

I get to as many as I can, a lot of my mates have season tickets and they always help out if I’m back for the match last minute … I’ve done a few this season, few away days also.

How does this Newcastle United side compare to teams of the past?

This Newcastle side has united the city. For so long the city was beginning to become divided. With the new owners and Eddie at the helm, the city is unified. Long may it continue.

What would winning the Carabao Cup mean to you?

It would cap off what’s been an amazing 12 month for the fans and the club. I can’t tell you how much I want us to beat them and lift the trophy.

Do you have a message for Eddie Howe and the players ahead of the game?

Good luck and get some of my tunes on in that dressing room!

If you could select one of your tracks to be on the EFL Carabao Cup final playlist, what would it be?

‘Dream For A Moment’ definitely fits the vibe and would be a good one, for sure.

Finally, let’s hear your prediction for the final… can Newcastle United do it?

I’m incredibly optimistic. 2-1 Newcastle … HOWAY THE TOON!
