'This Is My Club' with Huddersfield Town fans Flawes

14 April 2023

We spoke to Flawes singer  Josh “JC” Carruthers about his beloved Huddersfield Town.

How did you become a Huddersfield Town fan?

Being obsessed with sport and music from an early age and growing up in Rastrick, Huddersfield Town was the obvious choice. I was first introduced by my godfather Nigel aged 10 and haven't looked back since. It could have all gone terribly wrong though, a couple weeks prior my uncle had attempted to sway me into being a Leeds fan with a trip to Elland Road but thankfully I saw sense. I had a season ticket at Town all through secondary school before I left home for London to pursue my career in the music industry.

Who were your Town heroes growing up?

Boothy (Andy Booth), the one and only.  We played an acoustic set in the fan zone a couple of seasons ago and through his work as a club ambassador it was him that was sending me all the emails back and forth to organise all the logistics which was pretty surreal. We spent that day hanging out with him too where I managed to keep my cool and not let on that I was losing it inside….Until he sees this haha!

What are your earliest memories of watching the club?

My season ticket used to be in the Chadwick Lawrence stand sat next to a good mate of mine, his brothers, dad, uncle and friends all sat next to each other taking up the whole row. I’d often wait until half time to ask politely down the row if anyone could give me a lift home rather than having to get the bus. Other than that, I remember my first ever town shirt with Ben Thornley on the back, at the time I was told that it was his actual shirt as worn in a game, I couldn’t believe it and treasured it dearly. Looking back though I have questioned the validity of this story with it being a child’s size medium.

What’s your favourite Huddersfield Town memory?

The obvious Chrissy Schindler penalty in 2017, oh what a feeling, what a night! I was also lucky enough to be at the Chelsea game at Stamford Bridge that confirmed our Premier League status the following year too which needs no introduction. I do however remember going to the League One Play-Off Final back in 2011 at Old Trafford, the worst thing being I had planned my birthday night out directly after the game…cue 12 of us all sat in a bar in Manchester miserable not speaking to one another after losing to Peterborough United.

With your busy schedule, do you get to many games?

Yeah, I try to go to as many of the London away games as I can and then catch a couple games around the festive period when I’m back up north.

Tell us what you have got coming up...

We’ve just come off the road across Europe supporting Tom Grennan which was amazing. Our second album. ‘One Step Back, Two Steps Forward’ comes out 9 June so just gearing up getting ready for that by having released three singles (‘Tears Won’t Show’, ‘Don’t Blame Me’, ‘Is It Any Wonder’). We’ll also be heading out on tour in the summer too so keep an eye out!

You can listen to ‘Tears Won’t Show’ on the EFL Sounds playlist.
