Goal of the Month: March winners

14 April 2023

The March winners of the Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month Award are:

Sky Bet Championship

Harry Pickering – BLACKBURN ROVERS v Sheffield United – 4th March

Blackburn Rovers defender Harry Pickering is the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month winner for March.

A majestic 90-yard counter-attack by Blackburn from their own area. Four players touched the ball, but others contributed by taking defenders away before Pickering applied the final flourish.

Pickering said: ““I’m buzzing and didn’t expect it, but I’m happy I’ve won.

“It was a great counter-attack. I saw Sammie (Szmodics) play the ball to Tyrhys (Dolan) and there was space on the outside of him.

“I managed to get round him, give him an option, he played a good pass and I put it in. I kept it on target, I hit it well and I was delighted to see it go in.

“Against a team like Sheffield United, it was a big game and it was a brilliant feeling that it turned out to be the winner.

“I’ve scored in most of the seasons I’ve played in and I hope to get a few more now.”

Pickering beat off competition from Norwich City’s Gabriel Sara, Bristol City’s Andreas Weimann & Wigan Athletic’s James McClean.

Sky Bet League One

Alfie May – Peterborough United v CHELTENHAM TOWN – 11th March

Cheltenham Town forward Alife May is the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month winner for March.

A stunning virtuoso volley from the halfway line. May struck two other glorious goals in March, but neither could match the sheer impudence, imagination and technique of this magical moment.

May adds the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award to the Sky Bet Player of the Month that he also picked up for March.

He said: “They are great awards to win. I said it before and I'll say it again, it wouldn't be possible without my teammates.

“It's the first time I've won goal of the month and it's really nice to pick that up. I could've had three nominated!

“Now I just want five more goals, but the most important thing for us is to stay in this league, so we are going to push in the remaining games.”

May beat off competition from Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Hardie, Derby County’s Haydon Roberts and Charlton Athletic’s Steven Sessegnon.

Sky Bet League Two

Omar Bugiel – SUTTON UNITED v Crawley Town – 7th March

Sutton United striker Omar Bugiel the Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner for March.

As the ball ricocheted around the Crawley six-yard box, Sutton fans would have taken a scruffy tap-in. Bugiel had a different idea, conjuring up the sublime with a deliciously cute back-heel.

Bugiel said: ''In the position I was in I thought I'd just go for it. Sometimes it works and sometimes you make a fool of yourself, but luckily it went in, and I'm delighted that people have enjoyed watching it and voted it the Goal of the Month.”

Bugiel beat off competition from Northampton Town’s Jack Sowerby, Colchester United’s Noah Chilvers & Salford City’s Callum Hendry.
