Matchday in feature: Shrewsbury Town v Fleetwood Town

5 February 2022

Shrewsbury Town will be looking to complete the double over Fleetwood Town this weekend in our featured game from Sky Bet League One.

The Shrews were on top form the last time these two sides met but will they secure maximum points from the Cod Army?

📅 Match details

Kick-off at Montgomery Waters Meadow is 15:00 on Saturday 5 February as the Shrews and the Cod Army get the month under way in Shropshire.

James Bell has been named as referee to be joined by assistant officials Andrew Hendley and Gareth Viccars, along with fourth official Christopher Sarginson.

👔 At the helm

Mid-way through the 2020/21 campaign, Steve Cotterill was appointed as the new Shrewsbury Town head coach and the 57-year-old got off to a flying start in Shropshire. Undefeated in his first seven League outings, including victories over the top three contingent comprising Hull City, Lincoln City and Doncaster Rovers, the Shrews manager set the standard for the rest of his stay.

The Gloucestershire-born boss had been without a Club since his departure from Birmingham City in 2018, having tasted success with previous employers Cheltenham Town – whom he guided from the lower echelons of the non-League pyramid to the EFL – and Bristol City, where he completed the League One and EFL Trophy double.

Former Scotland international Stephen Crainey took his first leap into management with ex-employer Fleetwood Town this season as caretaker manager, before being appointed as the Cod Army boss on a permanent basis until the end of the campaign.

The Glaswegian has settled on the West Coast after making the move to Lancashire to sign for Blackpool in the summer of 2007. Over 200 appearances later and a promotion from the Championship, the 40-year-old has also had spells at Wigan Athletic and Fylde.

🔑 Key man

Shrews striker Daniel Udoh sits top of both the Shropshire side’s scoring and assist charts, with eight goals in 29 League outings, including the equalising strike to rescue a point against AFC Wimbledon last weekend.

The forward, who moved to England from his native Nigeria aged nine, spent time in both Luton Town and Stevenage’s youth set-ups before dropping into the non-League pyramid. A move to Crewe Alexandra followed before signing for Telford United where he caught the eye of the Shrews last season, notching 26 goals.

In his second spell at the Club, Fleetwood full-back Danny Andrew initially joined the Cod Army as a newly promoted League One side in May 2014 and, after stints at Grimsby Town and Doncaster Rovers, opted to return to Highbury in 2018.

The defender has been a mainstay in the Fleetwood side, having turned out 28 times for the Lancashire outfit this season.

📈 Form guide

Three goals and three points gave Shrewsbury Town - who occupy 17th place - the victory the last time the Shrews and the Cod Army met on Boxing Day in Lancashire. Ryan Bowman, Josh Vela and Udoh all made the scoresheet as Cotterill’s side took the spoils back to Shropshire.

Two points and two League positions separate Shrewsbury and Fleetwood. A Shrews side without a win in four and a Fleetwood outfit that haven’t tasted victory in their last three League clashes lock horns, with both teams coming into the fixture on the back of consecutive stalemates.

The 19th-placed visitors lurk just above the drop zone and two points clear of Morecambe, having enjoyed a period of rejuvenation at the beginning of January, with back-to-back wins over Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United.
