Matchday in feature: Sheffield United v Swansea City

19 February 2022

In-form Sheffield United have a chance to break into the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off places this weekend when Swansea City pay a visit to South Yorkshire.

Our featured game comes from Bramall Lane where the Blades will be looking to further cement their ambitions.

📅 Match details

Kick-off at Bramall Lane on Saturday 19 February is 15:00 as the Blades welcome the Welsh visitors to South Yorkshire.

Referee David Webb will be joined by assistant officials Adam Crysell and Geoffrey Liddle, along with fourth official Jeremy Simpson.

👔 At the helm

The return of Paul Heckingbottom has steadied the ship for Sheffield United, with the Blades boss cutting a familiar figure at Bramall Lane, having assumed the role of caretaker manager as the side suffered relegation from the Premier League after seeing the departure of Chris Wilder.

Since taking on the role in a permanent capacity earlier in November, the former Barnsley boss has seen just one defeat in the last 10, getting off to a winning start against Bristol City, going on to win three on the spin.

Swansea City boss Russell Martin arrived in South Wales as one of the EFL’s most promising young managers, making the switch from Sky Bet League One side Milton Keynes Dons in the summer.

The 36-year-old’s first home game in charge ended in a goalless draw with the Blades the last time the two teams met in the League.

🔑 Key man

Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham boasts one of the best minutes-per-goals-conceded records in the second-tier, with 10 clean sheets in his last 16 appearances over the course of the current campaign.

The shot-stopper started the season as third-choice behind Aaron Ramsdale, who completed a switch to Arsenal, and Michael Verrips, who headed out on loan in the January transfer window, but has since proven himself between the sticks.

With 12 goals and four assists and counting, Joël Piroe has become a cornerstone in Russell Martin’s Swans side since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

The Dutchman, who ended his seven-game goal drought last weekend, netting against the Robins in a 3-1 triumph in the League, marked his debut for the Club with a goal in the Carabao Cup and has led the line expertly for the Swans.

📈 Form guide

Second only to Fulham in the Championship form table, Sheffield United are unbeaten in their last seven, with just one defeat in the Blades’ last 13 League outings. Swansea, meanwhile, are without a win on the road since October.

Heckingbottom’s side registered back-to-back stalemates with Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town and Hull City, whilst Martin’s men come into the fixture with a victory over Bristol City last time out, coming from behind to beat the Robins.
