Carabao Cup Final 'a huge opportunity', says Chelsea skipper

Cesar Azpilicueta is hoping to lift the trophy again, 10 years on from making his debut in this competition...

4 February 2022

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has described the upcoming Carabao Cup Final as "a huge opportunity" for his side, as they prepare to take on Liverpool at Wembley.

The sides will meet under the famous arch on Sunday 27 February, with Chelsea looking to lift the trophy for the sixth time in their history, following their most recent triumph in 2015.

Azpilicueta, who was part of the Blues side that day, says he would love to get his hands on the Cup again and can't wait to walk out at the home of football.

“We’re really excited for the Final," he said, speaking exclusively to the EFL. "It’s a privilege to play in a game like this at Wembley; we as players know what it means for everyone at the Club, because it’s a big opportunity to win a trophy. It’s a special day and, of course, we’ll do everything we can to win.

“It’s always special to win a trophy, and when you have the chance, you want to take it.”

The 32-year-old made his Chelsea debut in this competition, in a 6-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers back in 2012, and has since become a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.

Azpilicueta says this year's Final will be a special occasion for both himself and the supporters, and acknowleged the bond he has with the Blues faithful.

“It’s massive to have the chance to be here with our fans in a final, because we all dream about days like these," he added.

"We have a great connection with the fans and always try our best for them; we’re all proud of that connection and we’ll push together to win.

“The support is something I’ve felt since I arrived in England, it’s special. In the cup games, our fans go everywhere and support us, so it’s great to bring them to Wembley. Hopefully, we can share a good day together against Liverpool."
