Kids Cup report: Jessica – Willowtown Primary School

20 December 2022

On a cold Thursday morning, Willowtown children from Years 5 and 6 took part in the Newport County local final for the EFL Kids Cup tournament at Cwmbran Stadium. They were invited as guests following on from their success at the Ebbw Vale cluster tournament.

Willowtown were drawn in Group 1 along with Gaer, George Street and The Dell. Willlotown’s first match was against George Street where they battled out a credible 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Harrison kept a clean sheet with help from Hayden, Lucas and Oliver. With Archie and Brogan keeping the George Street defence busy. Peyton and Kayla both did an amazing job when coming on as substitutes.

The second match, Willowtown came up against a good side from Gaer Primary. The Newport team looked like they had played together for a long time, knowing where to find each other on the pitch. As the final whistle blew Gaer Primary had outmatched Willowtown with a 3-0 win.

Going into the final group match Willowtown still had a chance to go to the Knockout Stages, needing a win against The Dell by three goals. An eventful match started with a free kick taken by Lucas, almost scoring the opening goal. This chance woke up The Dell team and within a minute they scored to make it 1-0, giving the Willowtown team a mountain to climb.

With the Willowtown team having to score goals, the team pushed forward knowing they needed to win by four goals, only for The Dell to catch them on the break to increase their lead. In the second half of the match The Dell scored another two goals, and they added a fifth at the final whistle.

During all three matches the Willowtown team gave 100% which will make the school proud of their efforts. Coming up against very skilled teams, they gave everyone a tough game, despite some of the score lines.

Overall, a fantastic day full of quality football.
