That’s a wrap for another weekend in the EFL across the three divisions!
We catch up on the weekend’s action from the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two…
It was Blackpool who claimed the Lancashire bragging rights over Preston North End as the two teams met in the League for the first time in over 10 years. Keshi Anderson and Gary Madine struck at either side of the break for the Tangerines in a comfortable 2-0 victory over the Lilywhites.
Elsewhere, Sheffield United edged local rivals Barnsley in the Championship. The Blades, who made the trip to Oakwell, fashioned a 3-0 lead in the second-half and despite a spirited fightback from the Reds, it finished 2-3 to the visitors.
Fulham put an end to Nottingham Forest’s five-game winning streak when Steve Cooper’s men entertained the West Londoners in the second Sunday kick-off. The Cottagers registered a comfortable 4-0 victory over Forest.
The team on top, it was Bournemouth who finished the weekend in first place, with a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town extending their lead at the summit to five points.
In League One, Rotherham United’s impressive display over Milton Keynes Dons extended the Millers’ unbeaten run to eight games in Buckinghamshire. Paul Warne’s men secured all three points with three goals from Michael Ihiekwe, Daniel Barlaser and Freddie Ladapo on Saturday afternoon.
They say all good things come in threes and the saying rung true for Shrewsbury Town and Ryan Bowman at the weekend. The Shrews’ 4-1 showing over Cambridge United moved the Shropshire team up to 20th, as the striker notched the perfect hat-trick – marking the second treble of his career to date.
Meanwhile, Charlton Athletic edged high-flyers Sunderland, with Jayden Stockley’s match-winner the only goal of the game at the Stadium of Light, where the Black Cats were previously undefeated on home soil.
And Wycombe Wanderers moved inside the top two, dislodging the Wearside team in second place with a 2-1 triumph over Crewe Alexandra.
Rochdale resigned Sutton United to back-to-back defeats in League Two. Sutton clawed their way back to 2-2 with Alistair Smith’s 90th minute equaliser all but rescuing a point for Matt Gray’s side, until Aaron Morley appeared right on cue in the 95th minute to cement the 3-2 win for the Dale.
Newport County’s Dom Telford made it four goals in two games, as the South Wales team cruised to a 3-1 win over Bristol Rovers. Telford was at the double, taking his tally up to six League goals for the season.
Bradford City returned to winning ways against Swindon Town on Saturday, as the Robins sunk to sixth place with a 3-1 defeat to the West Yorkshire team.
And the top three kept the pressure on, as Forest Green Rovers, Port Vale and Northampton Town recorded wins over Salford City, Colchester United and Tranmere Rovers respectively to round off the weekend’s action.
