Matchday in feature: Bristol Rovers v Northampton Town

13 November 2021

It’s back to Sky Bet League Two this weekend, where Bristol Rovers lock horns with Northampton Town in our featured 3pm kick-off.

The high-flying Cobblers occupy a coveted top three spot, but a Gas side pushing up the rankings stand in their way.

📅 Match details

Kick-off at Bristol Rovers’ Memorial Stadium on Saturday 13 November between the Gas and the Cobblers is 15:00.

Referee Sam Allison will be joined by assistant referees Mark Derrien and James Vallance running the line, alongside fourth official Darren Wilding.

👔 At the helm

Bristol Rovers boss Joey Barton arrived at the Memorial Stadium in February of this year, just over a month after his departure from Fleetwood Town. The former midfielder played for the likes of Manchester City and Burnley during his 15-year-long playing career.

After working his way through the Cobblers' academy coaching setup, Jon Brady was named Northampton manager on a permanent in May 2021 following the Club's relegation from the Sky Bet League One, replacing the outgoing Keith Curle in the hotseat as caretaker manager earlier in February.

The Australian, who moved to England in 1991 to sign for Brentford, represented a number of EFL Clubs, including Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage and Cambridge United over the course of his career.

🔑 Key man

Bristol Rovers starlet Connor Taylor has slotted in at the heart of the Gas defence seamlessly, with the Stoke City loanee arriving in the South West in the summer in search of valuable game time, following temporary stints with Ashton United and Chester.

Recognised for his performances, with the youngster named the EFL’s Young Player of the Month for October, the 20-year-old has chalked up 13 appearances to date this season for the Gas.

Also fresh off the back of his League Two Player of the Month for October nomination, Cobblers midfielder Mitch Pinnock inked a two-year agreement with Northampton in the summer, journeying south of the border from Kilmarnock, alongside Killie team-mates Nicke Kabamba and Aaron McGowan.

The 26-year-old came through the ranks at Southend United before dropping into the non-league scene. Pinnock returned to the EFL with AFC Wimbledon, turning out a total of 73 times across two seasons for the South Londoners.

📈 Form guide

Rovers, who are striving for consistency in the League, have recorded one defeat in their last five, seeing off Harrogate Town last weekend on the road. The Gas are level on 18 points with Barrow, but just five points separate 16th-placed Bristol Rovers and sixth-placed Leyton Orient, with all still to play for.

Looking to build on four consecutive wins in October, third-placed Northampton will be hoping to kick November off with a win. The Cobblers trail League leaders Forest Green Rovers by four points, occupying the final promotion spot.

Brady’s men will also be expected to bring their shooting boots, with Northampton manging 10 goals in their last four outings, along with four clean sheets.
