Sunderland shoot-out win sets up Papa John's Trophy Final with Tranmere

The 2019 finalists will take on Keith Hill's men after a 5-3 penalty shoot-out win

17 February 2021

2019 finalists Sunderland AFC will take on Tranmere Rovers in the 2021 Papa John's Trophy Final after a penalty shoot-out win over Lincoln City.

Home-town hero Grant Leadbitter scored the decisive penalty, as the Black Cats prevailed 5-3 on spot kicks over Micahel Appleton's men.

Lincoln's Remy Howarth was the only man to miss from the spot, hitting the bar.

Charlie Wyke's header - his 22nd goal of the season - forced penalties after Anthony Scully's follow up effort put City ahead.

Sunderland, who lost the 2019 Final on penalties against Partsmouth, will meet Tranmere Rovers in the final on Sunday 14 March after the Sky Bet League Two side beat Oxford United 2-0 in Tuesday's first Semi-Final.
