Matchday in feature: Morecambe v Fleetwood Town

18 December 2021

The North Lancashire coast plays host to our featured game this weekend as Fleetwood Town make the short journey to face Morecambe in Sky Bet League One.

📅 Match details

Kick-off between the Shrimps and the Cod Army at the Mazuma Stadium is 15:00 on Saturday 18 December, along with a full programme of fixtures set to take place across the division.

The man in the middle on Saturday will be Christopher Pollard, who will be joined by linesmen Richard Woodward and Joe Clark, along with fourth official Marc Edwards

👔 At the helm

After Derek Adams’ departure at the end of last season, Stephen Robinson was named as the man to lead Morecambe into their first-ever season as a League One club. The 47-year-old has over 200 games in management under his belt, including three years at Scottish Premier League side Motherwell.

Fleetwood Town, meanwhile, are still without a permanent manager after parting ways with Simon Grayson last month, meaning caretaker boss Stephen Crainey will take to the dugout once more this weekend.

After a successful career as a defender which included promotion to the Premier League with Blackpool in 2010, Crainey turned to coaching at Fleetwood Town’s Academy after hanging up his boots. As the Cod Army’s caretaker, Crainey has overseen five matches, including back-to-back wins in his last two which has seen Town climb out the relegation places.

🔑 Key man

With League One Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards to his name already this season, Cole Stockton appears unstoppable, scoring 13 goals in 20 games so far - including an added time winner from his own half in the reverse fixture against Fleetwood Town earlier in the season.

Stockton leads the scoring charts for the division and will be hoping to have added to that come Saturday evening.

Nicknamed the 'Fleetwood Beckham', full-back Danny Andrew is having a superb season for Fleetwood Town, starting every game so far and contributing six goals and six assists in that time. Andrew is in his second spell with the Cod Army after re-joining the club from Doncaster Rovers in 2019.

📈 Form guide

With three losses on the bounce and a long trip to Portsmouth last time out, Morecambe will be hoping that the home atmosphere of a local derby will help to inspire them to a much-needed victory on Saturday afternoon.

Three points in this fixture would see Morecambe leap-frog their visitors in the table, but more importantly, see them climb out of the relegation places. This will be no easy task, however, with the Shrimps holding the unwanted record of leakiest defence in the division.

Fleetwood will travel to the Mazuma Stadium on a high after back-to-back home wins under caretaker boss Stephen Crainey, picking up a valuable victory over fellow strugglers Gillingham last weekend.

The Cod Army aren’t out of the woods yet, finding themselves in 19th position in the table and will be desperate to claim the bragging rights in this derby, having been on the wrong end of a 5-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley last time they faced a local opponent.
