Papa Johns Trophy

The Papa John’s Trophy Group Stage preview

27 August 2021

Having already overcome Manchester United Under-21s earlier in the week, Group F table toppers Lincoln City will travel to West Yorkshire where Bradford City await last year’s Semi-Finalists on Tuesday evening.

The Imps edged the Reds’ youth academy in their opening fixture, putting three points on the board and getting their 2021/22 campaign off to a winning start.

There are four further all-League Two ties to look forward to as Carlisle United take on Hartlepool United in Group A, Oldham Athletic and Salford City go toe-to-toe in Group B, Bolton Wanderers host Port Vale in Group D, and Mansfield Town travel to Harrogate Town in Group G.

Both still without a first League win of the season, Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra could kickstart their campaigns in Group C when the two teams face off in the Papa John’s Trophy in midweek.

For Sheffield Wednesday, the Owls will test themselves against Newcastle United’s Under-21s in Group E, with the South Yorkshire team flying high in League One.

In Group G, Fleetwood Town get their campaign underway against Leicester City Under-21s, and Accrington Stanley face Barrow for the first time in the competition.

The Southern Group Stage Group C begins with Wycombe Wanderers against Aston Villa Under-21s, whilst Burton Albion welcome League One rivals Milton Keynes Dons to the Pirelli Stadium.

Sutton United will do battle with Crystal Palace Under-21s in their inaugural Papa John’s Trophy tie, with the newly promoted League Two team entering the competition for the first time in their history, and in-form Stevenage will feel confident ahead of their Group H clash with Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s.

Elsewhere, Forest Green Rovers look to preserve their 100% record in all competitions against Northampton Town on Tuesday evening in Group D.

Rounding off the evening’s action, Crawley Town make the trip to Charlton Athletic in Group G, and 2020/21 Quarter-Finalists Oxford United travel to Cambridge United in Group H.
