James x Carabao Cup: celebrity fan Q&A

23 April 2021

Described as "a jewel in the British music crown," Manchester-based rock band, James, are next up on our list pre-Carabao Cup Final Q&As!

Aside from making music, Jim Glennine, the band's longest-serving member, is a massive Manchester City supporter, and can't wait to see his side walk out at Wembley once again...

First question, Jim... just how much are you looking forward to this season’s Final?

I'm very much looking forward to it. Hopefully the start of this season's silverware. And it will be nice to see a few fans there too, a clear sign we are heading back to a more normal world.

Where will you be watching the game?

I'll be watching the game at home with pizza and beers!

And, if you had to pick, who’s your favourite player in the City side?

Tough one, this. We have had so many players step up and have amazing seasons: Stones, Gundogan, Mahrez, Cancelo, Foden and, of course, KDB. But I'm going for Ruben Dias. He has galvanised the defence and I think that's the single, biggest reason we are where we are this year.

Cast your mind back for us... what's your earliest memory of watching City?

My Mum was a single parent, bringing the three of us up in Moss Side and we had no money for football matches. But I remember at Maine Road the stewards used to open the gates at half-time, so you could just walk in for free. My mates and I would all meet up and pile in. So I've seen dozens of second halves of City games from the 1970s.

What's your score prediction for the Final?

2-0 to City.

On to our matchday playlist... give us one song to fire up the fans.

To fire up the fans, it's got to be 'Pounding' by fellow City fans 'Doves'. Great song from an amazing band.

What's your ultimate team walk-out song for Wembley?

Oasis and Wonderwall. I remember them playing it at Maine Road back in '96. Awesome.

And one song for the dressing room?

'Seven Nation Army, by 'The White Stripes'. Suitably anthemic.

If City are losing at half-time, what's your song for that?

'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division. What a tune. Sad and powerful. I had the great honour to play bass on this at a 'Peter Hook And The Light' gig alongside Peter and his son Jack. A dream come true for me.

And if you're winning?

Elbow's 'One Day like This'. One of the most joyous and uplifting anthems going.

Last but not least, what song would you want to hear if City lift the Cup?

For lifting the cup... 'Laid' by James. Back in May 2012 when we beat QPR on that greatest of days, after the game ended, I was in the Colin Bell Stand with my son jumping around and then as if things couldn't get any better they played 'Laid'. Bonkers.

Listen to ‘All The Colours Of You’ by James, plus all of Jim’s playlist picks on the official EFL Spotify Playlist here.
