Carabao Cup Q&A: Declan McKenna

22 April 2021

As a singer, songwriter and music producer, Declan McKenna is certainly kept busy, but this Sunday he'll be having a day off to watch his beloved Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup Final!

We caught up with him ahead of kick-off for an exclusive Q&A...

Declan, how much are you looking forward to this season’s Final?

I'm buzzing for the Final! Games like this don't come often and it feels like it'll be an important one for us after an up and down season. It's exciting to know that, if we play at our best, we are in with a huge chance... even against such a strong opposition.

Where will you be watching the game?

Well there's no way I'm not going to try to be one of the 8,000 fans at Wembley somehow! But otherwise I couldn't be sure... a pub garden if i can, or just at home, maybe we'll get the projector out for it.

Who’s your favourite player in the Spurs side?

I think Højbjerg has been so reliable this season; I’ve been really happy to see him have such an assured season as a new signing. He wins the ball well, controls the movement of the game and can get an important goal or two. It’s been great to watch.

What’s your earliest memory of watching Spurs?

Beating Chelsea 2-1 on fireworks night '06 is quite memorable for me. We never used to win games like that back then, and it was fireworks night, so it was all-round class from the perspective of a seven-year-old.

What’s your score prediction for the Final?

3-3 at the end of added time, Spurs win 7-6 on pens.

One song for the Wembley Playlist, to fire up the Spurs fans ahead of kick-off?

The whole playlist can be Ossie’s Dream (Spurs are on their way to Wembley) in my book! I plan to listen to it all morning and the night before.

One song for the dressing room?

Fix up, look sharp - Dizzee Rascal

One song for half-time (if you’re losing)

I love the idea of them throwing on 'Kate Bush - There goes a tenner', it would set a new tone for sure.

One song for half-time (if you're winning)

The world is yours - Nas

Finally, a song for the trophy lift when your team wins!

Starstruck - Sorry
