Sky Bet League One: Manager and Player of the Month September winners

8 October 2020

The winner of the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for September is...

Paul Lambert (Ipswich Town)

Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has been named the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for September.

Lambert has been here before. Twelve months ago, his side made a similar start to September’s maximum nine points from nine. While that didn’t ultimately lead to promotion, his youthful side look determined to atone this time.

Lambert said: "It's joint effort from the staff and the players. Without the players and the staff, you don't really get anything like that. Big thanks go to them.

“I’m at the forefront of it but without the staff and the players and everybody pulling together these sort of things tend not to come around too often.”

Danny Wilson chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.

He said: “Out of the blocks quickly, Paul Lambert and his men scored six goals and conceded zero for three straight wins in September.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “The Tractor Boys were the model of consistency in the month of September, making things look very straightforward indeed.

“Three games, three 2-0 victories and some superb individual performances from Paul Lambert’s youthful outfit have Town fans believing once again that promotion is on the cards this season.

“Of course, it’s only last season that Ipswich were in exactly the same position and there’s an awfully long way to go, but being up there in the opening weeks of the season is just the tonic for the club’s loyal fan base.”

Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “Paul Lambert’s Ipswich won all three games in September to top the early standings in Sky Bet League One.

“In a competitive division, Ipswich were one of the favourites for promotion at 4/1 before a ball was kicked, and after Lambert’s Tractor Boys have started strongly Sky Bet have cut them to 13/8

“Ipswich are expected to be there or thereabouts this season and we currently have them as 9/2 joint second-favourites (behind Sunderland) for the title from 12/1 a month ago.”

The winner of the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for September is...

Madger Gomes (Doncaster Rovers)

Doncaster Rovers midfielder Madger Gomes has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for September.

The elegant Spaniard strode through opposing defences carrying the ball forward at will in September and scoring a goal in every game. His goals were easy on the eye, too – a left-footed curler, a long-range effort and a stinging strike.

Gomes said: “"I’ve been playing regularly and working hard to help the team, and every time I wear the shirt I give my best wherever the manager needs me.

"I think the goals have been a result of playing with more confidence, I know the league better now and have a better reading of the game.

“I’ve managed to work myself into space to receive the ball in good areas, and that’s when I’ve been able to get my shots away.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “When you score a goal from midfield in every game of a calendar month, it should come as little wonder when the accolades come swiftly after.

“Madger Gomes was a revelation for Rovers in September and richly deserves this award.

The Spaniard produced some wonderful strikes for Doncaster, with each giving the sense that it was a real shame there were no fans in the ground to fully appreciate his outstanding performances.”

Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “Madger Gomes was in outstanding form for Doncaster during September.

“The Spanish midfielder scored a goal in every game as he helped Donny to two wins and a draw.

“Sky Bet rated Rovers rated as a mid-table outfit before the season started, but after some eye-catching performances from Gomes in particular we have gradually been increasing their rating each week and if they can finish where they are now in the Play-Off places, this would represent a very good season for Darren Moore’s team. They are 2/1 to finish in the top six from 4/1 a month ago."
