EFL Archive: Back-to-back promotions for Tranmere Rovers

17 March 2020

May 2019 saw Tranmere Rovers defeat Newport County in the most dramatic fashion at Wembley Stadium, to secure their place in Sky Bet League One for the 2019/20 season...

Newport County 0-1 Tranmere Rovers

A goal from Connor Jennings, scored in the final moments of extra-time secured successive Play-Off Final victories - and promotions - for the Merseyside club.

Having secured their place in the Play-Offs on the final day of the season, Newport County looked as though they’d be the ones going home smiling, especially after a run of 12 unbeaten in the regular season.

After striking the post and defending superbly throughout they looked the more likely. Joe Day kept League Two Player of the Season James Norwood at bay, and was later tested by experienced midfielder Ben Pringle, but with neither side able to make the breakthrough in 90 minutes, the game was forced into extra-time.

Chances in extra-time were few and far between and just as we looked to be heading for penalties, Jennings kept his cool to head home and send the travelling fans into raptures.

His goal broke Newport hearts, but earned Tranmere a second Play-Off Final victory in as many seasons. A second successive promotion meant they would return to the third tier after a five-year absence.
