Preview: Championship action!

17 July 2020

With Brentford breathing down their neck, West Bromwich Albion know that three points against Huddersfield Town on Friday night is a must if they are to keep hold of that final automatic promotion place.

After drawing their last two games against Blackburn Rovers and Fulham respectively, the Baggies have recently started to look in their rear-view mirror.

Moving on to the early action, Saturday sees Brentford take on Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

As mentioned, Thomas Frank’s side are on the promotion trail and have won all of their games since the restart. Stoke City on the other hand managed a midweek draw against Bristol City to ease their relegation worries.

Wigan Athletic equalled a Sky Bet Championship record on Tuesday night as they put 8 (eight) goals past struggling Hull City.

A hat-trick from Kieran Dowell was the highlight of the night for Wigan, but things look bleak for the Tigers, who are now two points from Championship safety and preparing to face fellow relegation candidates Luton Town in a crunch match at the KCOM Stadium.

Elsewhere, Sunday’s action pits Derby County against Leeds United, with the visitors needing just one point to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds’ players, management team and fans will no doubt be hoping to secure promotion at Pride Park after the Rams denied the Whites the chance to reach the Play-Off Final at Elland Road last season.

Barnsley face the impossible if they are to remain in the Sky Bet Championship next season, they are four points from safety with only two games of the season left to play.

The Tykes have Nottingham Forest on Sunday and Brentford on the final day of the season, so Gerhard Struber's side will need maxium points from the two Play-Off bound outfits to survive in the division.

Forest however will secure a Play-Off spot with a win over Barnsley at Oakwell, depending on results elsewhere over the weekend.
