Comebacks, shootouts and plenty of goals! Round Three of the Leasing.com Trophy had its fair share of thrills and spills, here’s what you may have missed.
Exeter City were the first side to secure their place in the Quarter-Finals with an impressive 2-1 win over League One promotion contenders Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys sold out the away end at St James Park on Saturday but left disappointed after a last minute winner from Lee Martin put Matt Taylor’s side through.
Holders Portsmouth continued their trophy defence with a 2-1 win over League Two side Walsall, goals from John Marquis and Ellis Harrison put Kenny Jackett’s side in the hat for the Quarter-Finals.
Further north, Fleetwood Town welcomed fellow League One side and Lancashire neighbours Accrington Stanley to Highbury and it looked as though Joey Barton’s side were heading through until Ross Sykes popped up with an 89th minute equaliser to send it to penalties. John Coleman’s men were victorious in the shootout as Stanley defeated Fleetwood for the second time in the competition, having beaten them at the Wham Stadium during the Group Stages.
Tranmere Rovers fell to Leicester City U21s who fought back from a goal down at Prenton Park. Harvey Gilmour’s strike put the League One side a goal up at the break but second-half goals from George First and Admiral Muskwe gave the young Foxes the win. They will be joined in the Quarter-Finals by Paul Hurst's Scunthorpe United who overcame Manchester City's youngsters 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Elsewhere, Newport County were impressive in a 3-0 win over MK Dons, with Salford City beating Port Vale by the same scoreline and League Two Stevenage defeated League One Play-Off contenders Bristol Rovers.
Host Jim White will be joined by studio guest Natalie Sawyer and EFL pundit and former West Brom and Wolves forward Don Goodman to conduct the draw.
