Jay: Exeter to 'take confidence from previous rounds.'

17 February 2020

Exeter City forward Matt Jay says the team will be taking confidence from previous results in the competition as they head to Portsmouth in the Semi-Final of the Trophy.

The Grecians have seen off the likes of Oxford United and Ipswich Town in previous rounds, and Jay, who was nominated for the Quarter-Final Player of the Round for his impressive performance against Stevenage, wants to use those wins as motivation to claim another scalp.

He said: “We have beaten some good sides along the way, some teams from higher divisions and some teams that have been doing really well in their respective divisions.

“We are going into the game with a lot of confidence. When you start winning game after game you set your sights on the next opposition, so we do our work and make sure we are ready for the next game.

“It is [Fratton Park] a stadium that has got a lot of history and it has fantastic atmosphere, it is a ground that I have not played at before, I have been there to watch a few times. Hopefully the pitch will be good and I am looking forward to playing at a ground like that.”

Jay was part of the side that was beaten in the 2017/18 Play-Off Final by Coventry City, and the forward adds that reaching Wembley is something that he has just started to think about.

He added: “I am really looking forward to the challenge, it will be a tough game, obviously. We are away from home and coming up against a team that are doing very well in League One.

“But we’re there, we will be hoping that we can cause a bit of an upset and get into the Final. Wembley isn’t a thing you think about at the start of the competition but as soon as you start to get through the rounds it certainly comes into your thinking.

“We have done quite well in this competition so far, it is something that motivates us, for sure, and we are only one win away from reaching that goal.
