It was the return of Carabao Cup action on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Here are five things you may have missed amongst the action.
1. Colchester United reach Quarter-Finals for only the second time in their history
In the all Sky Bet League Two clash on Tuesday night, Colchester United managed to overcome Crawley Town at the People’s Pensions Stadium by three-goals-to-one.
Goals from Luke Norris, Luke Gambin and an own-goal from Red Devil’s goalkeeper Michael Luyambula ensured the U’s safe passage to the Quarter-Final stage.
This is only the second time in Colchester’s 82-year history that they have made the final eight of the competition, last doing so in the 1974/75 season, where they eventually lost to Aston Villa.
2. Oxford United are spot on against Sunderland AFC
Karl Robinson’s Oxford United side have been relentless so far this season, and they continued their red-hot form in the cup on Tuesday evening.
After taking the lead through Rob Hall, the U’s were pegged back deep in the second-half by Sunderland and Marc McNulty.
But Robinson’s men had the last laugh from the penalty spot as Oxford netted all their penalties in the shootout.
Meanwhile Sunderland’s journey ended after misses from Will Grigg, who fired over the crossbar, and McNulty, who had his effort saved by Simon Eastwood.
This is the first time Oxford have reached the Quarter-Final stage since the 1987/88 season.
3. Man City still in the hunt for third Cup win in a row
It was business as usual for Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side in Round Four of the Carabao Cup.
A solid 3-1 win over fellow Premier League side Southampton made sure the Citizens would feature in the Quarter-Finals once again, with goals from Nicolas Otamendi and a Sergio Aguero double.
Guardiola has enjoyed this competition in recent years, winning it twice in as many years, with victories over Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.
They face Sky Bet League One side Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium in the next round.
4. Rashford double sends United through
Marcus Rashford took the bull by the horns at Stamford Bridge as he fired twice to send Manchester United into the Quarter-Finals at the expense of Chelsea.
The Wythenshawe-born forward struck from the penalty spot in the first-half before Michy Batshuayi levelled the game up in the second-half. for Frank Lampard's side.
Looking for the winner, Rashford lined a free-kick up from 35-yards, smashing an unstoppable drive into the top-left corner of Willy Caballero’s goal.
A goal that has since been likened to Cristiano’s free-kick against Portsmouth in 2008.
5. A 5-5 thriller at Anfield sees Liverpool eventually progress on penalties
A blockbuster night at Anfield saw Jurgen Klopp’s young Liverpool side progress to the Quarter-Finals of the competition after a rollercoaster of a game against Arsenal.
The Reds and the Gunners put on a spectacle which eventually ended in a 5-5 draw after 90 minutes of football, with the game heading to penalties.
It would be the hosts who would progress after scoring all five of their penalties on the night, the visitors only managed to score four of theirs with Dani Ceballos having his spot-kick saved.
Liverpool will take on fellow Premier League side Aston Villa at Villa Park in the next round.
