The 2019 Checkatrade Trophy Final between Portsmouth and Sunderland has set a new record attendance for an EFL Trophy Final with 85,021 people watching today’s fixture at Wembley Stadium.
Today’s attendance beat the previous record set in 1988 when 80,841 supporters saw Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Burnley 2-0 to claim the Trophy.
The Checkatrade Trophy Final was the second highest attended football match in Europe this weekend, beaten only by Barcelona v Espanyol in La Liga.
The attendance also smashes the EFL Trophy Final record at the new Wembley, eclipsing the 74,434 for Coventry City’s 2017 triumph against Oxford United.
