Wilder: Individual errors cost us

8 February 2019

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder says individual errors cost his side all three points against Aston Villa.

The Blades were 3-0 up with less than 10 minutes of the game remaining at Villa Park before an incredible comeback by the hosts saw the game end 3-3, and Wilder says he never saw that result coming.

“Sometimes as a manager you can see that it’s coming and I never felt that at all, but the game is historically mad, and when Dean [Henderson] makes an error for the first goal, you could see they [Aston Villa] had a spring in their step,” he said.

“And then there was another error for their second one, but I think we dealt with their two wide players, we dealt with everything and we pushed back a good team.

“They didn’t create or carve us open at any period but you have to see it through, but you see when it gets to 3-1 they had a bit more urgency about them.

Billy Sharp scored a hat-trick for the Blades before goals from Tyrone Mings, Tammy Abraham and Andre Green pulled the game level for Dean Smith’s side, and Wilder says he wants to concentrate on the game as a whole.

“We have come to Villa Park and dominated so that good players and referees have to make decisions, some you get and some you don’t, but if you look at the picture we were the better team out there,” he added.

“My team dominated his team and my players dominated his players, some good players they have got as well, in front of 36,000 on a Friday night, in front of the Sky cameras.

“I think the players showed enormous belief, especially in the second half and they really didn’t have an answer to us at all and their goals have come from errors.”
