January Goal of the Month nominations

8 February 2019

The January nominations for the Sky Bet Goal of the Month Award are as follows:

Luke Freeman – Aston Villa v QUEENS PARK RANGERS – 1st January

Quickening his pace as he collected a short pass in midfield, Freeman had one thing in mind as the space opened up before him, to strike a sweet left-footer into the top corner.

Freddie Sears – Aston Villa v IPSWICH TOWN – 26th January

There is nothing worse for a keeper than a shot from distance which looks saveable until it arcs cruelly away from his reach and finds the corner. Sears judged his effort impeccably.

Semi Ajayi – ROTHERHAM UNITED v Leeds United – 26th January

Rampaging forward and collecting the ball in his stride, Ajayi wasn’t about to instigate an intricate team goal. A central defender’s wallop would do – and how – as it flew into the net.

Ali Crawford – DONCASTER ROVERS v Rochdale – 1st January

Standing over a free-kick near the touchline, Crawford used the twin pillars of technique and deception to arc his dead ball effort up and over Rochdale keeper Magnus Norman.

Charlie Kelman – SOUTHEND UNITED v Plymouth Argyle – 12th January

Ah, the audacity of youth. On as a late substitute for his debut, the 17-year-old announced himself to the football world by uncorking a shot, and scoring, from his own half. Yes, really.

Adam Hammill – SCUNTHORPE UNITED v Sunderland – 19th January

Just 13 minutes into his debut, Hammill rewarded Scunthorpe for buying him, feinting to try a first-time shot before unleashing an unstoppable curler into the top corner to earn a draw.

Kevin Ellison – MORECAMBE v Crewe Alexandra – 5th January

His soon-to-be 40-year-old legs might be slowing down, but Ellison’s football brain is still razor sharp. Witness this intelligent, looping first-time effort up and over the Crewe defence.

Shay McCartan – Swindon Town v LINCOLN CITY – 12th January

Goals like this come around once in a career. McCartan adjusted his stride as a hooked clearance dropped to him and timed the dip on his exquisitely struck volley to perfection.

Jevani Brown – CAMBRIDGE UNITED v Northampton Town – 19th January

Most players would have used their right foot to shoot here, but Brown knows what his left can do. A flick with the outside of his boot and the ball was arrowing towards the top corner.
