Support continues across the EFL

4 September 2018

Nearly two million supporters have made their way through EFL turnstiles during the opening month of the season, with promotion contenders and surprise packages emerging as the 2018/19 campaign starts to take shape.

The 1.97million total represents a ten per cent increase from the same period last season across the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two and shows a continuing appetite for the live matchday experience at stadiums up and down the country.

The Championship recorded an average attendance of more than 20,000, with Leeds United and Aston Villa continuing to attract over 30,000 supporters to every home game, with Marcelo Bielsa’s table-toppers recording an EFL-high attendance of over 35,000 in the Friday Night Football offering against Middlesbrough at Elland Road.

League One welcomed 8,200 on average per game, an increase of four per cent, with a divisional-high crowd of 31,075 at the Stadium of Light watching Sunderland’s first game of the League One season as they claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory against Charlton Athletic to begin their campaign with three points.

Lincoln City and Milton Keynes Dons posted the highest attendance figures in League Two, with the overall divisional average at over 4,200.

The developments follow reports at the end of 2017/18, which showed that supporters making their way through the turnstiles of EFL Clubs is continuing to increase year-on-year.

The Sky Bet Championship had seen the highest individual growth, with attendances rising by almost 210,000 to surpass 11.3 million, whereas the whole of the EFL again topped 18million across all three divisions for only the third time since 1959.
