Sky Bet League One: Preview - Matchday 16

25 October 2018

The action in Sky Bet League One once again didn’t disappoint on Tuesday with an incredible 36 goals. It had hat tricks, sendings off and drama everywhere you looked and you can expect more of the same tomorrow for Matchday 16.

Derby Day in Lancashire

Blackpool travel to their local neighbours Fleetwood Town on Saturday, having never lost to their local rivals in their history. In the six previous occasions the two sides have met, Fleetwood are yet to come out on top.

Joey Barton’s side sit just two points below the Tangerines in the table and can go above them with a win, but they come in to the game having not scored in their previous two fixtures. If that’s to change, they will be heavily reliant on top goalscorer Ched Evans who already has six this campaign.

Blackpool meanwhile are in excellent form and have not lost in their last ten league games, keeping eight clean sheets along the way. The second best defensive record in the EFL behind only Middlesbrough.

The last two times Blackpool have visited the Highbury Stadium, it has ended up as a 0-0 draw. Let’s hope for more action on derby day this time round.

Fantastic number Five for Cov?

You have to go all the way back to February 1998 to find the last time Coventry City won five matches in a row. They’ll have the chance to do so again this weekend against Doncaster Rovers at the Ricoh Arena.

Many of the Sky Blues’ team would hardly remember those wins and some of them weren’t even born. Including one of their star midfield men, Tom Baylis. Baylis scored in the dramatic game in midweek where Coventry won 4-2 at Valley Parade.

But City will face a tough test on Saturday if they’re to grab their fifth straight win against a Doncaster side who despite losing three of their last five, had only previously lost one game in their first ten matches.

A win for the home side though would see them leap to 4th place as they look to continue their impressive run.

Pompey away form to be tested?

Portsmouth face a stern test of their unbeaten away record this weekend as the leaders travel to 4th placed Accrington Stanley.

Despite Stanley’s defeat at Luton in the week, they are unbeaten in their last six games at home and will be confident on closing the gap to Pompey at the top.

Offrande Zanzala is enjoying a good run of form for the hosts and has two goals in his last three but having won seven of their eight away games during this campaign, Kenny Jackett’s side will be confident of extending their lead at the top of the table.

Around the grounds

Sunderland are the only side in League One to have scored in every game this season with 27 goals in the league. Their rich vein of form could well continue this week as the Black Cats face Southend at the Stadium of Light. The Wearsiders are unbeaten in seven league games and are now just a point adrift of the automatic promotion places.

After claiming a point against top of the table Portsmouth in midweek, Burton Albion will be confident of taking something on Saturday as they welcome Peterborough United. Posh got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win in midweek and are unbeaten in their last seven games away from London Road.

Elsewhere, struggling Gillingham entertain Bradford City hoping to overturn an unwanted record of five at home without a win and Luton travel to AFC Wimbledon with hat trick hero Danny Hylton hoping to continue where he left off on Tuesday night in a 4-1 win over Accrington Stanley.
