Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has been named the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for September.
As a player, the Northern Irishman loved space in midfield in which to create. McCann employed a 4-3-3 formation to stretch defences and give his players the same freedom. They responded with 13 points and 12 goals from five games.
McCann said: “It has been a good start, we are not getting carried away though. We have got a lot of improving to do.
“In terms of winning, I think the Yorkshire derby against Bradford City [2-1 victory on September 22] was a good result for us. We knew it was going to be a tough game.
“A new manager had gone in there in David Hopkin and we knew it was tough, and it turned out it was, but we showed real desire to get the job done and get the three points.
“It is a long season, it has been a good start for us, we are only 10 games in, we will keep level, take each game as it comes – the old cliché – and see where we can go.”
George Burley chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.
He said: “Grant has led Doncaster Rovers to third place in Sky Bet League 1 with a changed system which produced 13 points scoring 12 goals in the process.
“A great run of results in a very productive month whilst playing attractive football.”
Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Grant McCann revealed this week that he tells his players not to ask for the ball from a teammate unless they already know what they’re going to do with it.
“It’s through drumming ideas like this into his players which has allowed them to play with real purpose this season, and as his young squad continue to gain experience with each other, an exciting season is a strong possibility for Donny.’’
