Rotherham United have been promoted from Sky Bet League One following a 2-1 extra-time victory against Shrewsbury Town.
The first half belonged to Rotherham who started much the brighter, hurrying and harrying their opponents and creating all the pressure in the early stages.
They were presented with the perfect opportunity to take the lead when Omar Beckles hauled down Richard Wood in the penalty area, but Dean Henderson came to the rescue by denying David Ball from 12 yards.
Wood got the better of Beckles again just past the half-hour mark and this time the skipper finished the job himself. His downward header was planted firmly beyond Henderson to send the West End of Wembley into raptures.
It was a different story after the break, with Shrewsbury springing into life, and they got their equaliser in some style. A set-piece straight from the training ground involving Shaun Whalley and Mat Sadler ended with Alex Rodman gleefully tucking home.
Rotherham looked the more threatening in the closing stages of normal time, but more Henderson heroics denied Ryan Williams and took the game into extra-time.
Just before the interval in the additional period, Wood struck again, poking towards goal from close range and watching on as it bounced off the post and in the net.
Paul Hurst’s Shrewsbury couldn’t find a way back, and it was his former teammate Paul Warne who was celebrating promotion to the Sky Bet Championship at the final whistle.
