Play-Off Final: Coventry crackers seal Sky Blues success

Coventry City secure promotion to League One with 3-1 win over Exeter City

28 May 2018

Coventry City have been promoted from Sky Bet League Two following a 3-1 victory against Exeter City.

The first 45 minutes offered little in the way of goalmouth action, with Man of the Match Marc McNulty trying his hardest to make the breakthrough, although his efforts proved in vain in a goalless first half.

Soon after the break, the Sky Blues were in front, and the goal came from an unexpected source. The ball was fed to centre back Jordan Willis, who took one touch to set himself up for an emphatic effort into the far corner.

Five minutes later it was two. Jordan Shipley was played in by Marc McNulty and his drilled effort deflected off Pierce Sweeney, cruelly taking it beyond the despairing dive of Christy Pym in the Exeter goal.

Not wanting to be outdone by Willis, right-back Jack Grimmer got in on the act with two thirds of the game played. A stunning effort on his weaker foot found the top corner, and that was just about that.

Exeter City did get one back through Kyle Edwards’ fine individual effort, but Mark Robins and Coventry secured a second Wembley win in two seasons – and a return to Sky Bet League One.
