Play-Off Final: Captain Cairney carries Cottagers up

Fulham book Premier League return with Wembley win against Aston Villa

28 May 2018

Fulham have been promoted after winning the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Fulham started the brighter and got their reward midway through the first half. Ryan Sessegnon slotted Tom Cairney through on goal, and the Cottagers captain made no mistake, sliding the ball beyond Sam Johnstone.

That remained the scoreline at the half-time whistle, but the second half began at a frantic pace, with Steve Bruce’s words seemingly ringing in the ears of his Villa players.

Jack Grealish was a driving force and he should have equalised, heading over from Albert Adomah’s teasing cross. The local lad would continue to be frustrated, going on a mazy run before Fulham’s stubborn defence blocked his path.

The Villans were presented with a lifeline when Denis Odoi picked up a second yellow card and was subsequently dismissed with 20 minutes remaining, but Fulham held firm to win 1-0 and book their Premier League return.
