Preview: Matchday 39

23 March 2018

There’s a reduced EFL schedule this weekend, but Sky Bet League One and League Two action is still on the agenda. Here’s the preview…

Play-Off Pilgrims

After coming from behind to defeat Bristol Rovers in their last outing, Plymouth Argyle returned to League One’s top six.

They’re on the road this time though, and a trip to Charlton Athletic awaits. The Addicks currently sit in ninth place.

There’ll be a new face in charge of Charlton too, with Lee Bowyer appointed as caretaker manager following the departure of Karl Robinson from the Valley.

Three on the spin for Micciche’s men?

Up until 13th March, Dan Micciche hadn’t tasted victory as Milton Keynes Dons manager, but that all changed when they defeated high-flying Rotherham United at Stadium MK.

That became consecutive wins last week when they saw off Bury, also on home turf, to give their survival hopes a boost.

A third home match in succession arrives this weekend, when Blackpool are the visitors and, depending on results elsewhere, Micciche’s team could lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

Around the grounds

With table-topping Blackburn Rovers out of action, Shrewsbury Town have the chance to move to the summit, should they get the better of AFC Wimbledon.

The same can be said for Wigan Athletic, although the Shrews would have to drop points and the Latics beat Bury for that scenario to occur.

Scunthorpe United, who haven’t won a game since the start of February, will want to end that run against a Rochdale team that are just one place from the foot of the table.

The action then concludes on Sunday afternoon, with Portsmouth and Oxford United facing off, live on Sky Sports.

Hatters to capitalise?

Due to their superior goal difference and the fact that Accrington Stanley don’t play until next weekend, Luton Town could be sat on top of the table come Saturday night.

Presently three points adrift of Accrington, Nathan Jones’ men head into the home clash with Barnet, knowing that success would be enough to see them leapfrog the side directly above them.

It's a clash which will take place in front of the Sky Sports cameras, bringing the EFL Saturday action to a close in a 5:15pm kick-off.

Sunday action

Like League One before it, Matchday 39 in League Two is brought to a close by a sole Sunday fixture.

This one comes from the Proact Stadium, where two teams in need of the points for contrasting reasons meet.

Chesterfield sit six points from safety going into the weekend, when they come up against promotion-chasing Notts County. The Magpies are just three points adrift of the top three.

Around the grounds

Wycombe Wanderers could increase the margin to Notts County if they prevail at home to Port Vale and in turn climb to second, before Luton play later on Saturday.

Michael Jolley is still looking for his first three points since taking over at Grimsby Town. He has a tough assignment in which to accomplish that aim when he takes his side to Coventry City.

Fresh from their Lincolnshire derby victory over the aforementioned Mariners, Lincoln City make the trip to Morecambe, who have only lost one of their last six games.

Dino Maamria gets a first taste of life in the Stevenage dugout, when Colchester United head to the Lamex Stadium — will he get off to a winning start?
