Yeovil Town’s Corey Whelan has picked up the Checkatrade Player of the Round Award for his outstanding performance against Fleetwood Town in the Quarter-Final of the Checkatrade Trophy.
Glovers’ supporter Sharon Edwards won the opportunity to present the defender with his well-deserved award.
On just his second start for the club, the 20-year-old Irish right-back gave an accomplished performance in defence. He also broke forward, cutting inside brilliantly to score his first senior goal with his weaker left foot in Yeovil’s dramatic 3-2 win.
“Obviously I’m really pleased to pick up this award and now the most important thing is making the final at Wembley,” said Whelan.
“We’ve faced some really tough teams in the competition so far and personally, for me to play in it twice and score my first goal was really nice. You might only get one chance to play at Wembley in your career so that’s a real incentive to get through to the final.”
Sharon Edwards, the winning fan, said: “It is such an honour being able to present the award to a worthy winner; Corey’s performance stole the show against Fleetwood with his fantastic first goal for the club. Hopefully, he and the rest of the team can continue to perform as we get towards the business end of the season.”
Whelan was joined on the shortlist by other standout performers from the Quarter-Final ties in the Checkatrade Trophy:
- Jon Nolan (Shrewsbury Town)
- Harry Anderson (Lincoln City)
- Danny Rowe (Lincoln City)
- Harvey St Clair (Chelsea U21)
