England: Checkatrade Trophy and EFL starlets impress in European Championships

Young Lions bidding for Under-19 success in Finland

21 July 2018

England's Young Lions are within one point of reaching the UEFA U19 European Championships Semi-Finals, with a strong EFL presence among the 20-man selection.

A number of the players on show have also featured in the Checkatrade Trophy across the past two seasons, and they will be bidding for further success on the international stage following last year’s triumph in this tournament.

Seven of the squad are permanently contracted to an EFL club, while two more — Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Dujon Sterling — will ply their trade in the EFL on loan during 2018/19. Strikers Ben Brereton, Niall Ennis and George Hirst all have EFL experience under their belts.

Ten of the 20 have played in the Checkatrade Trophy, including Chalobah, Sterling and Chelsea clubmate Jamie Cumming. The trio helped the young Blues reach the semi-final last season, where they lost on penalties to eventual winners Lincoln City.

Manchester City’s Ed Francis and Japhet Tanganga of Tottenham Hotspur are among the other Trophy participants heading to the tournament in Finland, along with Nathan Ferguson, Max Sanders and Tom Bayliss.

North-east duo Elliot Embleton and Marcus Tavernier, of Sunderland and Middlesbrough respectively, featured in the 2016/17 Checkatrade Trophy before making their first-team breakthroughs last term.

In England's tournament opener, Brereton, Tanganga and Embleton were on the scoresheet in a thrilling 3-2 win over Turkey, while Tavernier netted in the second match – a 1-1 draw with Ukraine.

A point in the final group match against France on Monday afternoon would secure a place in the semi-finals and earn automatic qualification to next year's FIFA U20 World Cup.

England's 2018 World Cup Squad which reached the semi-finals in Russia included four players – Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, Dele Alli and Fabian Delph – who played in the Trophy during the early stages of their career.

In a few years time, maybe this current crop can take the nation a step further!
