Preview: Midweek action

30 January 2018

There’s midweek action on the way, with fixtures from the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two. Here’s our preview of what’s coming up…

Victorious Villans?

Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa side have a fifth successive Championship victory in their sights when they travel to Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

In that time they’ve scored 10 goals, conceding just once and sit a mere three points away from the automatic promotion spots.

The Blades, however, know that a win would lift them back into the top six, at the expense of Fulham, who defeated Barnsley over the weekend.

Battle at the bottom

Three crucial points are at stake at St. Andrew’s, where Birmingham City host fellow strugglers Sunderland.

Just one place and point separate the two teams, with the Black Cats in 22nd and the Blues in 23rd.

Success for either guarantees ascension out of the relegation zone, so this one needs little build-up.

Around the grounds

Five more clashes make up Tuesday’s Championship schedule, with second-placed Derby County's visit to Millwall one of those matches in question.

Nottingham Forest, who earned a first triumph under Aitor Karanka in their last encounter - a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers - welcome Preston North End to the City Ground.

There are Yorkshire meetings at the KCOM Stadium and the Riverside, where Hull City entertain Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday travel to Middlesbrough respectively.

Then, last but not least, we turn our attention to the Pirelli Stadium, where Burton Albion face Reading.

Saddlers head to Ewood Park

All of the League One focus will be centred on Blackburn Rovers’ clash against Walsall, with that the only fixture in the division on Tuesday.

For Blackburn, it presents a chance to go back into second spot but, for that to happen, only victory would suffice.

On the other hand, a Saddlers success could lift them as high as 14th. However, that’s all dependant on their margin of victory.

Automatic opportunities

Three sides are in with a shout of moving into League Two’s top three, with Coventry City, Swindon Town and Wycombe Wanderers all looking to move upwards from their respective current positions.

Coventry's test comes in the shape of a Cambridge United team that were on the end of a heavy 5-2 defeat at Forest Green Rovers in their last outing.

Swindon are faced with a trip to 14th-placed Stevenage and, as for Wycombe, things don’t get much tougher than a visit to league leaders Luton Town.

Huish return for Slade

Russell Slade will be back on familiar territory when he takes Grimsby Town to his former side Yeovil Town.

Slade was in charge at Huish Park from 2006 to 2009 and guided the Glovers to the League One Play-Off final, where they lost to Blackpool at Wembley.

Important points are on offer this Tuesday and, with the two clubs struggling for form of late, a win is much needed for both.

Two other encounters complete the League Two programme, with Lincoln City facing Newport County at Sincil Bank and, on Wednesday, Forest Green Rovers travelling to Exeter City.
