Friday night round-up: Bolton Wanderers edge past Bristol City

2 February 2018

Bolton Wanderers earned three huge points in their bid for Sky Bet Championship survival, overcoming promotion chasers Bristol City 1-0 on Friday night.

A quiet first half saw neither team create much in the way of clear-cut opportunities. Sammy Ameobi pushed and probed for the hosts, while the visitors eked out a few half-chances with nothing to show for it at the break.

Bolton stepped it up a notch in the second half, with Zach Clough sparking the game into life after being introduced for his second Trotters debut.

However, it was Ameobi who produced the game’s one real highlight, and it was worth the wait. Picking the ball up in his own half, he strode forward and arrowed a low, long-distance drive into the bottom corner of the net with 20 minutes remaining.

The Robins couldn’t carve out the chance they needed to salvage a draw, and it was the home faithful who were celebrating at the final whistle.

Three points send the Trotters up to 19th, while Lee Johnson’s men remain fifth.
