Tuesday night saw two Sky Bet Championship fixtures, and the 2018/19 Checkatrade Trophy get under way.
In the Sky Bet Championship, Middlesbrough hosted Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest welcomed West Bromwich Albion to the City Ground.
At the Riverside, Tony Pulis' side blew the Blades away in the opening 30 minutes. A second goal in as many games for Martin Braithwaite got them going, and that was followed by strikes from Aden Flint and Stewart Downing.
Chris Wilder's men were unable to get back into the game in the second half and headed back to Sheffield empty handed.
In Nottingham, the drama was saved for the second set of 45 minutes after the sides drew a blank in the first half.
Forest's Adlene Guedioura gave his team the lead on the hour mark, but that would not put the Baggies to bed.
With the game opening up, and chances going begging for both sides, a goal was coming. The equaliser came through a beautiful strike from Scotland international Matt Phillips.
In the Checkatrade Trophy, Swindon Town hosted Chelsea U21s and were beaten 4-0. The Chelsea goals came through a Charlie Brown brace, a Charly Musonda penalty and a late Ike Ugbo strike.
