Ups and Downs: Matchday permutations

27 April 2018

The penultimate weekend of the season. Plenty will be decided over a thrilling final weekend, but it's all to play for in Matchday 45, too. Here's what could happen...

Should Fulham lose at home to relegated Sunderland on Friday night, Cardiff City would have the opportunity to seal promotion – the Bluebirds travel to Hull City on Saturday afternoon.

At the other end, Barnsley and Burton Albion could be consigned to League One football, if the Brewers lose at home to Bolton Wanderers.

Should the Trotters prevail at the Pirelli, Burton would be relegated and the Tykes would need three points at home to Brentford.

Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers have sealed promotion, and now all eyes are on who will take the title.

It could well go down to the final day but, if Blackburn lose at play-off chasing Charlton Athletic this weekend, then victory for the Latics at home to AFC Wimbledon would hand them the League One crown.

At the other end, Milton Keynes Dons need to beat Scunthorpe United to have any chance of avoiding the drop.

Even if they do, points for either Oldham Athletic or Rochdale would send them down, due to the fact that Walsall or Northampton Town – who meet at Banks's Stadium – will reach or surpass 49 points come full-time.

For the Cobblers, they could potentially be relegated if they fail to beat the Saddlers. Should they lose, Oldham and Rochdale wins would officially send them down. A draw would leave a similar scenario although, additionally, AFC Wimbledon would need a point at Wigan to send Northampton down.

Accrington Stanley will get another shot at clinching the League Two crown, requiring a point at home to Lincoln City to wrap things up.

Should Stanley lose, Luton Town would need to see off Forest Green Rovers at Kenilworth Road to keep the chase alive.

Three points for Wycombe at Chesterfield, combined with defeat for Exeter City and Notts County, away at Stevenage and Grimsby Town respectively, would earn the Chairboys promotion.

At the bottom, Barnet must win at Morecambe to keep their survival hopes alive.
