Ups and downs: Matchday permutations

14 April 2018

It's the business end of the season; the time for promotion, relegation, and securing another shot with a place in the play-offs.

Here's what can happen this weekend...

Promotion

Wolverhampton Wanderers will guarantee themselves automatic promotion if they beat Birmingham City at Molineux on Sunday.

However, they could achieve a Premier League return before a ball is kicked. If Fulham fail to beat Brentford on Saturday evening, then Wolves are up.

If Cardiff City – away at Norwich City – fail to win, Nuno's men could even clinch the title against the Blues.

Should Cardiff lose at Carrow Road, a point will do for the leaders. A draw for the Bluebirds, and they'll need all three.

Relegation

Burton Albion's time in the Sky Bet Championship could end this weekend if they fail to pick up a point in their local encounter with Derby County.

Defeat at the Pirelli, combined with wins for Bolton, who travel to Barnsley, and Birmingham, would send the Brewers back down to League One.

Relegation

Bury's fate could well be confirmed this weekend, even if they manage maximum points against a Northampton Town side who are on the verge of relegation themselves.

If Oldham Athletic earn a positive result against Gillingham, the Shakers will be down regardless of what happens at Gigg Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Promotion

Accrington Stanley could be promoted this weekend, providing they register an eighth successive League Two victory when fourth-placed Exeter City visit the Wham Stadium.

National League

Macclesfield Town face off at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday lunchtime, on the brink of promotion.

If they obtain a positive result against the O's, Tranmere Rovers will have to match it later that day to deny the Silkmen an EFL return.
