Round-up: Midweek Matchday

24 April 2018

An entertaining night of EFL action saw one promotion secured, one relegation confirmed, and the battle for places intensify...

Derby County moved back into the top six, coming from behind to beat Cardiff City and open the automatic promotion race up once again.

Callum Paterson’s first-half goal was cancelled out by a Cameron Jerome double, either side of Matej Vydra’s effort.

In the night’s other game, Nottingham Forest cruised past Barnsley, scoring three without reply as the Tykes sunk deeper into relegation trouble.

Derby County 3-1 Cardiff City
Nottingham Forest 3-0 Barnsley

Blackburn Rovers clinched promotion back to the Championship after Charlie Mulgrew saw them to a 1-0 win at Doncaster Rovers.

Wigan Athletic were held to a 1-1 draw at Bristol Rovers, giving them a one-point lead in the race for the title, with two games to go.

Shrewsbury Town will be competing in the League One Play-Offs and warmed up with a 3-1 triumph over Peterborough United, all but ending the Posh’s hopes of joining them in the post-season.

At the other end, Milton Keynes Dons’ relegation was all but confirmed after losing 2-0 at Bradford City.

Rochdale jumped to 19th with a point against Plymouth Argyle, Ryan Delaney cancelling out Joel Grant’s goal.

Oldham were the team to drop into the bottom four as a result, after they were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Southend United. Simon Cox netted twice after Theo Robinson’s opener.

Bradford City 2-0 Milton Keynes Dons
Bristol Rovers 1-1 Wigan Athletic
Doncaster Rovers 0-1 Blackburn Rovers
Oldham Athletic 0-3 Southend United

Chesterfield’s relegation was confirmed without kicking a ball, due to Morecambe’s 0-0 draw at home to Cambridge United.

Another goalless draw between Yeovil Town and Forest Green Rovers saw both sides secure League Two survival.

At the other end, Accrington Stanley failed to get their hands on the title after Padraig Amond and Frank Nouble contributed to a 2-1 win for Newport County.

The night’s other game saw Lincoln City all but secure a place in the Play-Offs. A thrilling first half at the Ricoh Arena saw Lincoln City lead 3-2, and Lee Frecklington wrapped things up for the Imps after the break.

Coventry City 2-4 Lincoln City
