Checkatrade Trophy

Swansea City U21 secure progress with win in Wales

10 October 2017

Swansea City U21 secured their place in Round Two of the Checkatrade Trophy courtesy of a 2-1 win in their all-Welsh affair with Newport County.

A quiet first half went by without incident, but the match came to life after the break, with the Swans striking first through Kenji Gorre. However, his 70th-minute finish was quickly cancelled out when Shawn McCoulsky headed the hosts level just six minutes later.

But it was Swansea who had the last word when Newport Academy product Jay Foulston unfortunately deflected the ball into his own net, handing the visitors a second straight win and ensuring qualification from Southern Section Group E alongside Forest Green Rovers.
