Goal of the Month: September

7 October 2017

The September nominations for the Sky Bet Goal of the Month are:

Diogo Jota: WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS v Millwall – 9th September

Pace and directness terrify defenders. Jota collected a loose ball at speed, drove forward and used the space as defenders backed off to arrow his shot into the net.

Mustapha Carayol: NOTTINGHAM FOREST v Wolverhampton Wanderers – 16th September

Aware that John Ruddy was off his goal-line, Carayol didn’t waste a moment as he jinked inside and sent a perfectly judged, fiercely driven strike beyond the Wolves keeper.

James Maddison: NORWICH CITY v Middlesbrough – 26th September

Collecting a slipped Marley Watkins pass, Maddison knew instantly what to do. A cushioned touch was followed by a classy, arcing 25-yarder into the top corner.

Devante Cole: FLEETWOOD TOWN v Portsmouth – 16th September

It would have been easy for Cole to try to hit Lewie Coyle’s headed knock-down too hard. Instead, he calmly used his in-step to drag his subtle volley into the far corner.

Michael Jacobs: WIGAN ATHLETIC v Northampton Town – 19th September

When the Northampton defenders didn’t close him down, Jacobs strode into space and unleashed a sumptuous 30-yard strike that was still rising when it hit the net.

Tony McMahon: BRADFORD CITY v Northampton Town – 23rd September

The sweet, laconic beauty of this free-kick made it special. With almost no run-up, McMahon timed his clip over the Northampton wall into the top corner to perfection.

Chris Hussey: Swindon Town v Luton Town – 9th September

A strike that owed equal amounts to vision and technique. Striding into the area, Hussey cannily used the outside of his left foot to bend home an unstoppable shot.

Shaun Miller: CARLISLE UNITED v Barnet – 16th September

Poetry in motion as Miller turned a hopeful punt forward into a goal to savour. The key was his volleyed control which gave him the time to judge his hooked overhead exquisitely.

Jayden Stockley: EXETER CITY v Morecambe – 30th September

There seemed little danger when Stockley chested down a throw-in at the by-line. He had other ideas. A clever lobbed flick set him through on goal. His volley did the rest.
