Sky Bet League Two Play-Off Final: Cullen and Potts fire Blackpool to promotion

28 May 2017

Blackpool won the Sky Bet League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley by beating Exeter City 2-1.

The victory, which was secured with goals from Brad Potts and Mark Cullen, means the Tangerines return to Sky Bet League One at the first time of asking, following back-to-back relegations.

With the ball hitting the back of the net 22 times in the semi-finals, goals were always expected in the showpiece, and Potts’ opener came after only 130 seconds - he finished coolly from the edge of the box following an exquisite Cullen lay-off.

Exeter’s equaliser, in the 40th minute, was just as impressive, as David Wheeler brought down a long ball before lobbing Blackpool goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

The Grecians failed to maintain that momentum after the break, however, and it proved to be the Seasiders’ day. For their 64th-minute winner, Potts turned provider, cutting the ball across the six-yard line for an outstretched Cullen to poke home.

Paul Tisdale’s men huffed and puffed in an attempt to find a leveller but it wasn’t to be, and Gary Bowyer’s men ended two seasons of misery with Play-Off promotion.
