Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

7 May 2017

Newcastle United are champions of the Sky Bet Championship, following a thrilling final day of the 2016/17 season.

There was plenty of drama at the bottom, too, with Blackburn Rovers suffering relegation to Sky Bet League One despite victory on Sunday lunchtime.

Newcastle did all they could at home to Barnsley, with goals from Ayoze Perez, Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle handing them a 3-0 home win.

However, Brighton & Hove Albion were leading 1-0 at 10-man Aston Villa courtesy of a Glenn Murray spot-kick, meaning the title would be heading down south.

But, with just a minute of the 90 remaining at Villa Park, Jack Grealish beat David Stockdale to deny the Seagulls three points and the Championship crown.

At the other end, Blackburn Rovers scored an impressive 3-1 success at Brentford, but it was all in vain as Nottingham Forest defeated Ipswich Town 3-0, and Birmingham City won 1-0 at Bristol City to condemn Tony Mowbray's men to Sky Bet League One.

As for the Play-Offs, Reading won 4-2 at Burton Albion to confirm third spot, and they will now play Fulham, who won 2-1 at fourth-placed Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls face an all-Yorkshire affair for a trip to Wembley — they take on Huddersfield Town, who lost 3-0 at home to Cardiff City on the final day.

Portsmouth beat Cheltenham Town 6-1 on the final day of the season to clinch the Sky Bet League Two title in dramatic fashion.

Pompey started the day in third but a draw for Plymouth Argyle at Grimsby Town and defeat for Doncaster Rovers at Hartlepool United meant Paul Cook’s men finished top of the pile.

That victory for Hartlepool wasn’t enough to keep them in the division as Newport County saw off Notts County 2-1 with a last-gasp goal to secure their EFL status and send Pools down.

The Play-Off race saw seven teams battle for two places, and it was Carlisle United and Blackpool who grabbed them.

The duo knew prior to kick-off that three points would fend off the chasing pack, and they notched those. Blackpool cruised to a 3-1 win over Leyton Orient, while Carlisle United came from behind to beat Exeter City - a fellow Play-Off participant - 3-2.

Luton Town are the other team in the end-of-season showdown, and they ended the regular season by overcoming Morecambe 3-1.
